French Polynesia's renowned passenger-freighter ship, Aranui is preparing to launch a brand new ship, Aranui 5, with its maiden voyage on Dec. 12, 2015. The new ship is a custom-built dual-purpose vessel that sails from Tahiti to the Marquesas, Tuamotu and Society Islands in French Polynesia on a 14-day all-inclusive itinerary.

The new ship is a custom-built dual-purpose vessel that sails from Tahiti to the Marquesas, Tuamotu and Society Islands in French Polynesia on a 14-day all-inclusive itinerary. Aranui 5 raises the bar in terms of passenger comfort.

The launch of the Aranui 5 will better accommodate the demand for our one-of-a-kind experience with more spacious and comfortable quarters," said Jules Wong, marketing director of Aranui.

The ship features 103 cabins specially designed with added space for passengers' comfort and pleasure, featuring additional common places to unwind with an interior decor reflecting the Polynesian heritage and more balconies in the suites and superior deluxe staterooms.

Travelers booking a stay aboard the Aranui 5 will be able to choose from eight different cabin categories with accommodations ranging from Premium exterior staterooms (more than 90 percent with a private balcony) and Standard exterior staterooms with a picture window or porthole to Class C shared dormitory style cabins with occupancy for four to eight people. Room categories are Presidential Suite, Royal Suite, Premium Suite, Junior Suite (without balcony), Superior Deluxe, Deluxe, Stateroom and Class C - each providing diverse room configurations.

Public areas on the Aranui 5 include a reception area, casual restaurant, four bars, including the Sky Bar with sweeping panoramic views, dancing room, two conference rooms, two lounges, library, video and computer room, boutique, outdoor swimming pool with a whirlpool, fitness room and massage room.

The decor features Marquesan designs, Paul Gauguin prints and original paintings by Erhard Lux, a German artist who lives part-time in Moorea. The ship also features air conditioning in all passenger areas and indoor public spaces as well as two elevators onboard.

The cruise includes three meals daily with complimentary wine for onboard lunches and dinners, guided excursions as outlined in the itinerary, picnics and meals on shore. Optional excursions such as scuba diving, horseback riding and fishing are available for an additional charge. Prices for an Aranui 5 vacation start at $2,781 per person and do not include port tax, cruise tax and tourism tax, which may total up to $243.

One of the local crops, uru, the Tahitian breadfruit, is a key item in the traditional Tahitian feast called “Ma’a Tahiti.” It can be eaten in many different ways but the best way to cook the uru is in our famous ahima’a, the underground Tahitian style oven. The skin of the uru is black after being cooked and one has to peel the skin off and inside is a little piece of heaven. Tahitians most commonly eat the uru either alone, with butter, coconut milk and our personal favorite, corned beef. There are 120 varieties of uru in French Polynesia and they all vary slightly in taste, texture but what differentiates the uru most, is a slight sweetness. The uru is known for its energy boosting tendencies, and is high in fiber which helps lower cholesterol and triglycerides, thus excellent for heart health. The uru is also rich in omega-3 and omega-6 which have a number of health benefits for hair, and skin, and promotes a healthy metabolism. The uru also contains vitamin c, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, iron, and phosphorous.

Did you know...

The Islands of Tahiti are the birthplace of the signature overwater bungalow? The overwater bungalow was invented by three Americans from California who moved to the South Pacific paradise in the 1960s. Hugh Kelley, Muk McCallum and Jay Carlisle were known as the "Bali Hai Boys” and had fallen in love with French Polynesia and all that it had to offer. They opened hotels on both Moorea and Raiatea. Moorea was doing well due to its stunning location, beautiful beach and great snorkeling, however Raiatea was a bit more challenging as there was not a sandy beach. In searching for a solution, Kelley had an idea that would revolutionize the country’s tourism for decades to come. He suggested building bungalows over the water to give the guests direct access to the lagoon. Kelley also thought it would be unique to be able to look through part of the floor and into the water, and the glass-bottom floor was born! Kelley assured authorities and local government that coral would not be harmed in building overwater bungalows and pointed out that many Tahitians had built fishing huts on the water for many years. In 1967, the Tahitian authorities yielded to Kelley’s persistence and the first three overwater bungalows were built at the Bali Hai Hotel on Raiatea. These were followed by the overwater bungalows at Hotel Bali Hai Moorea and it wasn’t long after before friends at Hotel Bora Bora started building overwater bungalows based on the Bali Hai Boys design. Today, overwater bungalows are sought after and desired by millions of people all over the world and are the quintessential icon of paradise.

A new excursion is added to our Moorea Undersea Discoveries range. This 2 hour tour provides an excellent and secure first approach to the wildlife of the lagoon of Moorea.
After a minibus transfer from your hotel to the Vaiare dock, you will be taken by boat to Motu Ahi’s lagoonarium on the east coast of the island. Led by a qualified instructor, you will encounter a multitude of fish in absolute freedom: tropical fish (surgeonfish, tangs, parrotfish, butterflyfish, damselfish etc.), giant kingfish, moray eels, stingrays and blacktip reef sharks, and more... Watch their "daddy" Teiki feed them and play with his little brood... It is a show not to be missed! You can also discover the small motu, furnished with local odds and ends, a world of its own... For even more comfort, the latest generation of masks are available to visitors: enjoy snorkeling without the inconvenience of water in your mask or snorkel (careful! limited numbers).
