We have recorded this species before - this delightful tiny black dragon seems to be comfortable nesting at pavement level, where it builds its eye-catching red or orange circular nest. The population density seems to be growing steadily. We're not yet clear what this dragon's diet consists of, so it's unclear if a growth in numbers might impact other wildlife. Our researchers are keeping a close eye on this. In the meantime: watch your step! They seem to be resilient, but probably don't want to be stepped on.

One of the key rules of dragon-twitching is "if you spot one dragon, keep looking." Dragons are sociable creatures, and the conditions which attract one dragon will likely attract others too. We spotted a delightful example of this on the Mile End Road where this more recent large green dragon has chosen to make its home on the ground floor window of the same building as this much smaller bonded pair, above on the first floor bay window. Delightful!

We originally reported this singular dragon nesting at the Mug House pub, Tooley Street, over 5 years ago, but in the low light conditions it wasn't possible to do this dragon justice. It's been a while since we've talked about Red-Tipped Londinium dragons, the classic London dragon as spotted nesting on many City of London street signs, bollards, and beyond. This breeding pair was spotted on the London Magistrate's Court, near Bank station - an especially dense habitat for London dragons.

The most famous Red-Tipped Londiniums are the larger ones which work as guards for the City of London.

This breed evolved directly from the ddraig goch (Welsh Red) species which was brought to London by the Tudors as part of the menagerie of Royal beasts. However, the theory is that a few centuries in a polluted city prompted evolution to a colourway which camouflages better with the surroundings. They still retain a flash of red on each wing, and are a unique breed found only in London - as far as we know.

Incredible range of colours on display on this extremely tame dragon, which has chosen to take part in a merry-go-round! Rumour has it, if you sit down very gently, it will even let adults and children go for a ride on its back.

This dragon was spotted by the Cutty Dark, Greenwich.

Dragons can go to university! Surprise dragon seen nesting on a University of Westminster poster at a bus stop. Beautiful bright colour on this little apparently very tame little dragon.

We love how much these critters will make their homes everywhere: churches, castles, restaurants, bins, graffitied walls and everything in-between.

These pictures are of just some of the dragons (and their descendants) from overseas who have made London (Kew Pagoda specifically) their homes since 1762. They were originally brought here for royalty - Princess Augusta, the founder of Kew Gardens.

This is not the first London dragon originally introduced by royalty. The ddraig goch, or Welsh Red, which now forms part of the Royal Beasts, originally came to London as a household pet of Henry VII, who in turn has inherited his initial red dragons from his mother.

Back to Kew, though: there was a significant population drop of these Asian dragons in the 1780s, as knowledge was limited about how to care for and feed these beautiful beasts. However, with improvements in zoology, mythology and technology, the Kew Pagoda flock has revived and by 2019 was numbering 80 dragons in total!

Diversity is beautiful. We love how many different dragons our researchers can study in such a small geographic area. We're spoilt rotten & we wouldn't change it for the world.

Game of Thrones fans might get quite excited about this dragon, spotted nesting in a chapel in Southwark Cathedral. This delightful dragon is a two-headed species, though the positioning of one limb did have our experts fooled for a moment. If this dragon has been nesting here a long time, it may have been an inspiration for the artists creating the House Targaryen family crest. We just don't know.

This huge dragon was not sighted by any of our other dragon-twitchers, which seems like an oversight. Keep your eyes peeled and remember, folks, if you see a dragon: snap a dragon!

There's a reason that one of our rules of thumb for dragon twitching is "if you spot one dragon: keep looking". Dragons are often social animals, congregating with friends or family members. These two were spotted sunning themselves around a chimney on a house in Leyton, north east London.

Would you have spotted these dragons on the High Road towards Wood Green? Domestic dragons are more often spotted on rooves, but this area turned out to be densely populated with dragons.... & some birds tormenting them.

Urban dragons are, essentially, opportunists. Places where food scraps are readily available are frequent nesting sites....

Urban dragons are, essentially, opportunists. Places where food scraps are readily available are frequent nesting sites. So it wasn't a huge surprise to spot this delightful pair of green dragons nesting on the Red Lion pub in Leytonstone.

The more ornamental the building: the higher the chance that a dragon is nesting there. Our experts think it is because the fancy plasterwork allows the dragons to hide in plain sight

We were called for a welfare check on this large Asiatic dragon which nests above a restaurant in Camden Town. Its peeling scales alarmed some members of the public, who thought it might be poorly. We're happy to confirm that this dragon is perfectly well. The slightly unsightly peeling is just a sign that it's ready to shed this skin and grow even bigger, much like a snake or any other reptile.
