We drove from Flagstaff to Third Mesa Hopi with the wonder that is Marsha. Here Joe stands with the land. Tonight we will eat chicken cooked over an outside fire. Tomorrow we will distribute firewood and hand washing stations, food and Igloo coolers. The beauty here is breathtaking.

005|100 I was lucky enough to stumble upon Edy’s yummy fare during the early days of the pandemic (thank you ). His catering work no longer needed in a city under lockdown, he’d improvised by making delicious Lebanese takeaway in his basement flat. Little did he know then that he’d open a storefront during the midst of COVID. Little did I know then that I’d soon be living in his neighborhood. Edy’s Grocer feeds us in a pinch (mezze for life!), made us a lavish Thanksgiving feast and next week we’ll be cooking together for Valentine’s Day. By together I mean Zoom. Obviously.

001|100 The 100 Day Project officially began yesterday but I like the idea of starting on the first day of a new month. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve chosen 100 days of walks. Which is really about noticing. Which is beauty hunting, cataloging awe. Hopefully the big guy is in tow and it definitely requires heavy doses of backyard wayfinding. Day 1 starting off with a bang I’d say.

A break from the Alaskan wildlife action to bring you this announcement: if you are anywhere near London go see the Lee Krasner exhibition at Barbican before it closes! A fitting, emotional show for a remarkable and prolific artist, activist, groundbreaker. Definitely a highlight of my . @ Barbican Hall

On this day in 1456, the first edition of the Gutenberg Bible was bound and completed in Mainz, Germany. A shoutout to movable type and bibliophiles everywhere. This is the Mainz cathedral, taken with my back to the Gutenberg Museum, where I myself got a glance at one of the copies, held in a safe behind bulletproof glass. No photos allowed, though I did try.

Day 7 | Human

The girl human sits alongside Matilda of Flanders, Queen consort to William the Conqueror, reigning still among the statuary of the Luxembourg Gardens. Grace is in pursuit of three generations of Matildas and so we’re on a four country planes, trains and automobiles trek over the next few weeks to track them down. A solid addition to my pursuits and the inaugural days of this her 21st year.

Day 1 | Morning Light

A prompt (because I need a nudge to post apparently), a latergram from the trip to Athens in March (because I barely shared anything in real time then - or now), a brand new month (because who doesn’t love beginnings?!), a reminder from Stanley Kunitz (who became our 10th poet laureate at age 95):

It is out of the dailiness of life that one is driven into the deepest recesses of the self.

https://www.traveldeeper.com/these-hands-of-mine/

These hands of mine. I look down on them for hours on end as I peck away at the keyboard, click the mouse, scroll endlessly on Instagram. The swipe of a MetroCard, the twirl of a dinner fork that wrangles fettuccine into submission, anchor of downward dog, sudser of Dove bar. Wrist bony, skin taut,....

Day 7 | 9 a heart in the world

Circle words or phrases that stand out for you. Using those words you have circled...

Day 6 | 9 holy land
https://www.traveldeeper.com/holy-land/

This is holy land. She is a diverse wonderland of peaks and valleys, rough terrain with desert oasis, fertile plains and sturdy oak. A watery sack laden with miracles and memory. The seasons have waxed and waned as they do, marking her surface. Childhood stamped in a faint white box on the tender sk...

As the water droplets mix with the cold air, the skin prickles and she shivers. Day 4 | 9 Heartspace

For whatever reason, conjuring the map of my heart, the physical construct of it, eludes. It’s probably because I am the most pitiful of artists. This is not false modesty. Ask anyone who has played Pictionary with me and they will attest. If I could manage a steady hand and draw my love chamber, ...

Day 2 | 9 Here comes another quick public post because our "work won’t be fully realized until it’s shared." From a prompt related to walking outside my front door. Welcome to Bushwick folks.

My bad attitude about the current neighborhood situation has restrained my natural explorer. So I’m coming to this exercise with appreciation, especially because I extol the virtues of backyard wayfinding eagerly and often. At first glance, the radius I’ve drawn on the Google map doesn’t look ...

Day 1 | 9 Something new.

A short and sweet story I’ve long told myself goes something like this: you’re not a writer. There is a long list of reasons for this assertion. People are born writers. I’m not that clever. I already have a so-called profession. Also, writing is really hard for me. It’s a slog. Agonizingly ...

Today was a good day. Kayaking in the ocean to the Pigeon Islands for snorkeling. Coral reefs and loads of bright frisky tropical fish. Marching (teetering might be a better word) barefoot across the island to swim with a giant school of blue fish. Putting our best Naked and Afraid skills to work by ducking into a cave to ride out a passing storm. And then, on the 1 km paddle back, trying our luck with the sea turtles. We were warned: you must be patient (not my strong suit). I wasn’t hopeful. And then! Each of us saw one! I put my newly acquired snorkeling skills to test with a big old dive down to get a closer look. She was a pretty lass. The best was yet to come: we both swam to the top together. Yes, I SWAM WITH A TURTLE. Life changed. Bless you .

14 | 2018 Taught Me

Grief is one clever teacher, crafty, punishing, clarifying. It settled in this year, right down deep in the bones, relentless. Scared the hell out of me. And so I’ve learned to ask for help, to lay down my anger, to snuggle up to surrender, to let love all the way in and stew in its juices. It’s time to live forward again. Because joy has a different taste now. And I promise you this: I’m going to go out like a fu***ng meteor.
