As Sustainability season starts to wrap up, we'd like to reflect on this year's Legislative Education Day.

LED 2025 was a major success! Students from across NYC got the opportunity to visit Albany's capitol building and meet with elected officials to talk about their experiences with NYC Smoke-Free.

This past January, Reality Check Coordinators across the MARO region joined together to host the MARO Regional Summit in New York City! Students from across the region got the chance to interact with one another, prepare for Legislative Education Day (LED), hear from an advocate of the American Heart Association and participate in a Smoke Free Media scavenger hunt.

Stop promoting to***co to kids!

We and advocates worldwide are calling on Philip Morris International, Hearst and Condé Nast to stop promoting to***co products to youth.

Across the globe, Hearst and Condé Nast’s magazines like Glamour, Vogue, ELLE, Seventeen and Esquire are promoting Philip Morris’ to***co products on social media. These magazines represent fashion and culture, and they reach large youth audiences. It’s no surprise that the to***co industry is taking full advantage to glamorize and sell their deadly products.

We implore Condé Nast and Hearst to stop giving a platform to Big To***co — the deadliest business in the world.

Happy from Queens nominee, Cristian Muentes! Ms. Cris is the bilingual guidance counselor at ReStart Academy. Here's what Ms. Cris has to say about the Reality Check program at her school: "As a school guidance counselor, I make sure all of my students receive equitable academic opportunities, develop or enhance their career goals, as well continue to develop their social/emotional well-being through skills. Collaborating with NYC Smoke-Free/To***co Control contributes greatly to student success while fulfilling the Social Emotional and Academic Learning (S.E.A.L.) curriculum, part of our school district’s initiatives.  Through our “Reality Check” program, students continue to develop self-awareness, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, social awareness and self-management through real live scenarios, open and honest dialogue, individually and collaboratively as part of SEAL. It is through the intrapersonal relationship the NYC Smoke-Free counselor develops with my students that makes this initiative relevant and meaningful, not just as part of a curriculum but to the everyday lives of our students." According to the American Lung Association, as of 2021, the 5 major cigarette companies spent a total of $8.06 billion, close to $23 million a day, to promote their products.

These companies strategically brand and aggressively market their products with specific communities in mind. Menthol flavored products have been and continue to be heavily marketed to Black communities.

Lungs, the essential organs in charge of oxygen exchange in our bodies, are coming under more and more threat. Smoking is a huge threat to the lungs. The importance of having healthy lungs and the urgent need to prevent, identify, and treat lung disorders are highlighted on World Lung Day.

World Lung Day is a worldwide campaign to promote lung health and fight lung illnesses. World Lung Day is observed annually on September 25, and promises to be a significant occasion that brings together medical experts, researchers, politicians, and the public to combat the rising burden of lung illnesses around the world.
