Well we got an answer.....yes there is some Salmon in the Muskegon River.

Josh Miller just came in with this 34 inch 11.66lb fish. It was the first one we had brought in that was caught out of the Muskegon River.

Muskegon River Enforcement: Rules of the River

The Sheriff's Office in coordination with six local Twp's, provide patrol boats on the Muskegon River throughout the summer.

Below is a picture of a sign that is posted at each boat launch along the Muskegon River. Please review these "Rules of the River" and respect private properties along the river. There are very few spots along the river that are considered public land.

Vehicles that are parked in the roadway outside of boat launch property will be towed at owners expense.

We encourage the use of the river and beautiful natural resource that has been provided, but also encourage respect for those that own property along the river.

Important reminders. Although do you really have to point out that the river does not go in a circle? HA!

Muskegon River:

The summer heat brings out tubers and kayakers to the Muskegon River. Over the past two weekends, the Sheriff's Office River Patrol, DNR and local Fire Departments have rescues and removed approx. 50 people from the river. This past weekend alone approx.. 20 tubers were rescued from trees with several needing medical attention and being transported to a local hospital. The river can be a fun and enjoyable trip, however can also turn tragic in the blink of an eye.

Below are a few safety tip for your trip:

1. Know your limits - a large number of the people needing rescued advise us they that cannot swim.
2. Plan for weather - if there is a chance of severe weather, stay home.
3. Do not tie tubes together - If one gets tangled in the tree, they all get tangled.
4. Stay in the middle of the river and away from downed trees near the shore.
5. Keep hydrated - NOT with alcohol.
6. Lastly, know the length of the trip, some of these trip may take hours depending on the water flow levels. (the river is not a lazy river and does not go in a circle) Do not miss your destination.

If you have an questions on the river conditions, please contact our Recreational Supervisor, Sgt. Bailey at 231-689-7303.

Why are wetlands important?

With the warm weather finally here, humans aren’t the only ones out exploring West Michigan. Turtles are on the move, which means you’re more likely to encounter one along the shoreline or the road…
