2025 San Jacopo in-situ Artist’s mini-Residency in Rome, Italy

Dates: 10-15 March 2025 (6 days, add-on days possible)

Each day of the mini-residency begins with morning site visits to some of Rome's most significant early Christian landmarks, such as ancient basilicas, catacombs, and museums. These guided explorations provide in-depth insights into the historical, cultural, and artistic significance of early Christian art, setting the stage for the day's creative work.

In the afternoons, participants have dedicated time to engage in various creative activities inspired by the morning’s visits. These sessions include plein air painting and drawing in Rome’s scenic locations, creating collages that blend historical elements with contemporary techniques, conducting research, or writing in an inspiring setting.

This balanced schedule allows for both immersive learning and personal artistic development, encouraging participants to connect the rich history of early Christian art with their own creative practices.

Cost: $2,100 (scholarships available)

Price includes: 5 nights lodging double-occupancy (single available with $ supplement), daily breakfast, maid service, museum tickets and guided tours, Rome Metro pass, guided reflection.

Attendee’s must cover airfare to/from Rome and airport to lodging, travel insurance, lunch and dinner expenses, and art supplies.

Objectives:
During the mini-residency, participants will:
• Critically analyze early Christian art, focusing on its historical context, symbolism, and influence on the development of Western art traditions.
• Engage in creative activities designed to connect participants with the art and architecture of Rome.
• Collaborate with peers in discussions about early Christian art, aiming to integrate historical influences into contemporary creative practices.
• Develop pedagogical strategies that incorporate insights from early Christian art, enhancing the connection between historical concepts and modern classroom
activities.

Tomorrow, Sunday 29 September at 11 am
inside Milan’s Duomo, one of the most dramatic liturgical events will take place - the
“Beacon ritual for St. Tecla’s Feast”
But what is it?
Every year, on this occasion, a cotton-wool-made globe is hung at the entrance of the
presbytery. The celebrant lights it up.
This tradition is derived from an ancient liturgical act dating back to the 7th century when the “pharus” would be lit up during the most important celebrations.
