Nursing is, indeed, my calling. - Chrismarie Wales-lovino
Chrismarie Wales-Iovino, a nurse from New Jersey who cared for COVID-19 patients at Bellevue Hospital, wraps up our #HighgateHero series. Chrismarie had completed her ICU orientation two weeks before she was thrust into the coronavirus pandemic, referring to the experience as “baptism by fire” due to the incredible demands and constantly evolving situation the virus presented. This was a battle that her training hadn’t prepared her for. Her colleagues offered constant encouragement and advice, which helped Chrismarie develop the confidence, skills and patience to adeptly confront difficult issues, enabling her to provide her patients with the best possible care. This experience reinforced her belief that nursing is, indeed, her calling. Thank you, Chrismarie. We are lucky to have young, brave nurses like you caring for others. #inthistogether #covidheroes #covidstories
COVID-19 reminded me to be grateful for things I had taken for granted…"
We are honored to share with you the story of Beth Pannell, our final #HighgateHero. In the time leading up to the COVID-19 crisis, Beth was on family medical leave caring for her mother, who is facing end-stage metastatic breast cancer, and her older sister – her only sibling – who has end-stage Down Syndrome. In the face of mounting medical bills for her mother and sister, Beth was laid off from her job as a physician assistant just as COVID-19 was spreading across New York City. Beth faced an impossible decision – stay home and care for her family with no income, or take a temporary position in NYC that allowed her to help in a time of crisis and earned much-needed money to cover their care, but required her to leave her family for a time. Beth was humbled by the experience she had caring for critically ill patients in New York hospitals, nursing homes, jails and clinics – an experience that taught her to be grateful for the thing she had taken for granted. Thank you for your service, Beth. #inthistogether #covidheroes #covidstories
"I couldn't leave them if they needed me just one more day..."
We are pleased to honor Scott Sloyer as our first #HighgateHero. COVID-19 paused Scott’s sales job, so he decided to use this time to come to NYC and assist healthcare workers in their battle against the virus in any way he could – and he wound up staying twice as long as expected. Charged with sorting and delivering mail to 800+ medical workers staying at Park Central Hotel, Scott formed relationships with many doctors and nurses, and he noticed how receiving letters of encouragement boosted their morale. In addition to starting “Scott’s Cantina” as a place for healthcare workers to recharge with refreshments and snacks, he organized a letter writing campaign that provided hundreds of inspirational messages to these heroes, which he posted to walls around the Park Central. As someone with no healthcare experience, Scott’s selfless acts no doubt helped provide a soft place to land for front line workers, proving you don’t need a medical degree to help fight COVID-19.
