In Memory of the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja

November 18th marks a day of remembrance and reflection in Croatia. It is a day to honor the victims of the Homeland War and remember the tragic events that took place in Vukovar and Škabrnja in 1991. These two places have become symbols of courage, resilience, and the immense suffering endured during this dark chapter of our history.

In Vukovar, the battle lasted nearly three months under the siege of the Yugoslav Army. The city fell on November 18, 1991, with over 1,600 defenders and nearly 1,000 civilians losing their lives. Thousands of people were imprisoned, deported, or executed in systematic war crimes following the city's fall. Even today, hundreds of individuals from the Vukovar area remain listed as missing.

On the same day, in Škabrnja, a horrific massacre unfolded. 43 Croatian civilians were executed by Serbian forces, and the village was completely destroyed—homes burned, the church demolished, and fields mined. Survivors were either deported or imprisoned, and additional victims lost their lives after the liberation of the region due to leftover landmines.

These tragedies represent the immense sacrifices Croatia endured during its fight for freedom. Today, Vukovar and Škabrnja stand as places of remembrance and resilience, where people gather to honor the victims, share their stories, and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.

On this day, let us pay tribute to the heroes who defended their homeland at the cost of their lives.

On Wednesday, October 9th, a summit in support of Ukraine will take place in Dubrovnik, organized by the office of the Croatian Prime Minister. To ensure safety, special traffic regulations will be in effect from 6 AM to 12 AM.

Residents are asked to remove their vehicles from specified streets, including Ulica kralja Petra Krešimira IV, Druge dalmatinske brigade, and Frana Supila. Free parking will be available from October 8th at 6 PM until October 10th at 8 AM in designated lots. Traffic disruptions and road closures are expected, and buses may experience delays.

Caution on 'Summer Ice': In the rain, ease off the gas!
This is particularly hazardous on our roads in Dubrovnik, where the limestone-rich asphalt exudes under heat and becomes extremely slippery with the first drops of rain. On dry roads, every driver is skilled and every tire is good. But in the rain, true driving skills are tested! Especially in summer rain.

Remember this during times when rains and storms follow the summer heat. Rain that falls after a long dry spell turns roads into dangerous slides. The most perilous moment is when the real rain begins. Not with the first drops, but when the entire road surface gets wet. It becomes critical when the road is so wet that you can see the tracks of passing vehicles. At that point, the surface dust mixes with water, creating a thin layer of mud, which is as dangerous as ice.
