The second research paper from the MSC Grant 2022 is now available! "How Music Shapes the News: A Postcolonial Look at Polygoon Newsreels, 1930-87" by Emily Hansell Clark (University of Amsterdam)

In her research, Clark has investigated the use of background music in transnational audiovisual news reports qualified as colonial, which are part of the archival collections of the Netherlands Institute of Sound and Vision. She has made use of digital tools from data science and music information retrieval to isolate music and non-linguistic sound as an object of study. Her research allows for a deeper understanding of the multisensory ways in which public narratives of historical events were created and consumed, opening these up to ‘polyvocal’ interpretations.

Have you filled out the FIAT/IFTA Timeline Survey 2023?
We will be closing the survey on October 1st, 2023.

Where are you on the timeline?

Audiovisual archives worldwide are in constant transformation. To monitor this transformation, FIAT/IFTA would like to ask you seven short multiple-choice questions about preservation formats and content management systems in use at your archive, access to your archive, how metadata is created, your connection to the public, and (for the first time) the use of AI.

Please fill out the survey; it takes less than 10 minutes of your time. Please don’t be bothered about who in your organisation should fill it out. If needed, we can easily filter out the doubles.
