Le rocce dell'Appennino romagnolo sono un grande libro scritto che ci racconta la storia di questa regione. I singoli strati che si succedono in lunghissime sequenze ne rappresentano le pagine scritte, ciascuna che racconta gli avvenimenti di luoghi e ambienti un tempo molto diversi da quelli che oggi conosciamo.
Percorrere le strade che dalla pianura risalgono le valli dei fiumi Romagnoli è, quindi, una sorta di viaggio nel tempo, con i milioni di anni che si susseguono velocemente man mano ci addentriamo, pagina dopo pagina, strato dopo strato, verso il centro della catena.
E le pagine scritte circa 6 milioni di anni fa, ne rappresentano il momento più spettacolare, un momento particolare della storia geologica della Romagna, un tempo quello del periodo del Messiniano in cui la costa adriatica si snodava grossomodo a circa 15-20 km a sud dall'attuale via Emilia, ad esempio da Brisighella a Riolo Terme fino alla zona di Borgo Tossignano, e dove un clima subtropicale, più caldo dell'attuale, consentiva la deposizione di sedimenti ricchi in gesso, in un periodo in cui il Mediterraneo, complice la chiusura dello stretto di Gibilterra, viveva una vera e propria crisi di salinità, con depositi di di evaporiti in gran parte del suo bacino.
Una escursione guidata lungo il “Parco della Vena del Gesso” consente di scoprire nel dettaglio ciascun ciclo evaporitico, vedere come questi ambienti si siano evoluti nel tempo, percorrendo sentieri tra bancate luccicanti di gesso selenitico, improvvise doline e boschi profumati di roverelle e carpini. Così, passo dopo passo, sentiero dopo sentiero, si può comprendere perché questi ambienti sono oggi così importanti, al punto di essere degni di entrare a far parte dei patrimoni dell'Umanità dell'UNESCO!

The rocks of the Romagna Apennines are a great written book that tells us the history of this region. The individual layers which follow one another in long sequences represent the written pages of this book, each telling the events of places and environments that were once very different from those we can see today.
Traveling along the roads that go up from the plains to the valleys of the Romagna rivers is therefore a sort of journey through time, with millions of years that follow one another quickly as we gradually enter, page after page, stratus after stratus, towards the center of the chain.
And the pages written about 6 million years ago represent the most spectacular momentin the geological history of Romagna, the Messinian period in which the Adriatic coast stretched roughly about 15-20 km south from the current Via Emilia, for example from Brisighella to Riolo Terme up to the Borgo Tossignano area, and where a warmer subtropical climate allowed the deposition of sediments rich in gypsum, in a period in which the Mediterranean, thanks to the closure of the Strait of Gibraltar, was experiencing a real salinity crisis, with deposits of evaporites throughout much of its basin.
A guided excursion along the “Parco della Vena del Gesso” allows you to discover each evaporite cycle in detail, see how these environments have evolved over time, along paths between glittering banks with selenite rocks, sudden sinkholes and scented woods of downy oaks and hornbeams. Thus, step by step, path after path, anyone can understand why these environments are so important today, to the point of being included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites!
