Americans, myself included, have an enduring love affair with Britain. In 2023, over 5 million US travelers flocked to the UK - more than from any other country! And most of those spent time in London. See what the big draw is at the new Savvy Sightseer Remarkable London Landmarks Travelogue! Guaranteed - even frequent visitors to England's capital city will find something new – like why is there a man inside a clock at Paddington Station drawing minute hands?!

For a very different experience, how about Bergen, Norway? Steeped in history and culture, the west coast city is billed as the Gateway to the Fjords with absolutely amazing scenery. Find out which US city is considered Bergen’s “sister.” And what’s with that hanging hotel room?

Check my Programs page (https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/programs) to see if your library has scheduled an in-person date for it, or contact your library or community center to see if they are offering the video version. Happy Fall everyone!

Here comes another one! As a former business and computer teacher, you just know I love a good tag line, and Norway’s capital city, Oslo, has a really good one – “Please, walk on our roof!” In keeping with the philosophy that nature should be open to all to explore, Oslo’s shoreside Opera House has ramps leading up to the roof so you can take in the harbor views – for free – from all angles. At the newly released “Oslo: Captivating Capital City” program you can explore the sights and much, much more!

Check my Programs page (https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/programs) to see if your library has scheduled an in-person date for it, or contact your library or community center to see if they are offering the video version. You’ll also find flyers for all available programs; see one you’d like? Mention it to your library or center programmer! While at my website, you can also click under European Destinations and scroll down to Norway for a closer look at Oslo, as well as Norway’s other main city, Bergen. Watch for the release of “Bergen: Gateway to the Fjords” program, coming soon!

It's here! The newest Savvy Sightseer Destination Travelogue is now available. Not often can you say a place exceeded all expectations, but Prague, Czech Republic, definitely did for me! Medieval spires, a king (that would be Wenceslas of Christmas carol fame!) sitting on an upside-down horse hanging from the ceiling of a shopping center and even a giant revolving head of writer Franz Kafka, are just a few things that make Prague a magical destination! Add in a day trip to the National Park shared with Germany and you're adding a fantasy trip to the world of Narnia! Check out an updated flyer for Prague: Photographer’s Dream Destination and then check out the website for some pictures: lhttps://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/prague.

Check my Programs page (https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/programs) to see if your library has scheduled an in-person date for it, or contact your library or community center to see if they are offering the video version. You’ll also find flyers for all available programs; see one you’d like? Mention that to your library or center programmer!

Leaves are falling, holiday decorations are popping up and daylight savings time is over – so that means it is time to start thinking about 2024! And Savvy Sightseer is ready with some new programs to share! First up is the Peak District – the term may be unfamiliar but scenes from the midland region of England surely are not – from Chatsworth House seen in Jane Austin films to Nottingham and Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest – this program is packed with fun places to explore. Coming this summer is Prague: A Photographer’s Dream Destination. Medieval spires, a king (that would be Wenceslas of Christmas carol fame!) sitting on an upside-down horse hanging from the ceiling of a shopping center and even a giant revolving head of writer Franz Kafka, make Prague a magical destination! Check out flyers for these programs and then look on my Programs page (https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/programs) to see if your library has scheduled an in-person date for them, or contact your library or community center to see if they are offering the video versions. You’ll also find flyers for all available programs; see one you’d like? Mention that to your library or center programmer!

A true “hidden gem”! I bet many of you were like me and had no clue what or where the Isle of Man is, but I’m glad I can’t say that anymore. It’s a lovely idyll in the middle of the Irish Sea, an independent nation surrounded by, but not a technical part of, the United Kingdom. This is not your typical glitzy, run-every-minute, touristy destination. It is more like understated elegance. Remnants are everywhere of its restored Victorian grace. Find out more about this very different Savvy Sightseer Destination with my latest Travelogue. Check my website (https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/programs) or directly with your library or community center to see if they are offering it in video or in-person format. Hope to see you soon!

Will 2023 finally be the year in which we can easily travel back to Europe? Start planning now to make your getaway with the next new Savvy Sightseer Destination Travelogues! According to Google, one of the top ten destinations searched by Americans in 2022 has been our closest neighbor across the Atlantic – Portugal’s capital city: Lisbon. Check out these flyers to see just a little bit of what each of these exciting programs hold in store to appease – or pique – your wanderlust! Both will be offered in video format starting in April, and in-person at mostly western Suffolk libraries and centers. For a list of in-person programs and dates, check my website: https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues, or contact your event organizer to see if the video will be available for you.

New for 2023! A Savvy Sightseer Travelogue to another dynamic US Destination! This time the theme is the lure of open waters: Cape Ann, Massachusetts: America's Maritime Legacy. The program could be subtitled: A Leader of Superlatives: the oldest seaport, first fried clam dish, only church steeple serving as a lighthouse and longest running art colony. Also this is where the east coast's first schooner and whale watch launches occurred. Come along as we “journey” on a lobster boat, whale watch, schooner and more! Enjoy this fascinating and colorful coastal community at an in-person or video presentation through your library or community center. If your place hasn’t booked one yet, ask your organizer to contact me.

Also keep an eye out for who’s offering the European Holiday Markets – an annual treat!

Check my website for flyers and schedule for in-person programs: https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues. Hope to see you soon!

Borrowing from the popular British series Monty Python's catchphrase - Now for something completely different from Savvy Sightseer Travelogues!

When leaves change colors for the fall, it will be time for some colorful stories of the season! From Salem's famed witch trials to a Long Island one, and a ghost that roams both Sleepy Hollow and Oyster Bay, to long gone children heard still in local towns, there's an abundance of unexplained sightings, chilling tales of restless and lovelorn souls, eerie woods, youngster’s ghostly laughter and many other surprising stories to enchant you this fall, and leave you wondering just how true they are!

Check with your local library or community center to see if they are hosting the Video Vacation version of “Haunting Tales from Salem to Long Island” or my website to see where I am presenting the program in person: https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues. Have a boo-tiful time!

We’re at the unofficial start of the summer season, and this year promises to be a record-setter for travel within the United States! Two new Savvy Sightseer programs may inspire you to venture out west this year for some spectacular sights and experiences: Go West! National Parks & Canyons and Arizona: Amazing and Awe-Some!

In the first program, we start in Arizona with one of the most famous canyons in the world – the Grand Canyon; move up into the Navajo Nation with Monument Valley, over to Utah for Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, and back into Navajo Nation for a stop at the very dramatic Antelope Slot Canyon.

In the second, we set out to explore what lies beyond the Grand Canyon in Arizona, because there is just so much more to this state than its famous National Park – from a pre-historic Native American home to deserts and lakes, once thriving gold mine towns, mystic Sedona, and more, right up to the Utah border.

See the flyers for more details and check my website’s Programs page, https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues, to find out if your library or community center is offering a program in-person. Or contact your library or center directly to ask if they are opting for the Video Vacation version, and get the link to the program from them.

These programs are sure to surprise and inspire you, just as visiting them did for me!

Happy New Year! Well, here we go again! Looks like we will be continuing for a while longer to look for interesting distractions from ongoing Covid concerns. Fortunately, a new Savvy Sightseer Destination Travelogue has that covered! Rhode Island is a quick drive or ferry trip to New England for a day’s excursion or an extended stay-cation. In this travelogue we sample some of the nation’s littlest state’s big offerings; we pop in to three key cities that are as different from each other as possible: Providence, Bristol and Newport. See the attached flyer for more information, and check the website (https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues) to see if your library will be offering this program!

Wow! Almost November already, and 2022 is just around the corner. New Savvy Sightseer releases for the new year are ready to go: "Long Island Parks with Stories to Tell, Part 2" and "Spain – Passionate & Playful." Spain is so full of great stories and scenes that it’s been separated into two segments: "Southeast: Granada, Valencia and Barcelona;" and "Southwest: Madrid, Seville and Cordoba." Spain was the last European trip I took prior to the Covid-19 shutdown, which went into effect just weeks after I returned! Check out my website to see if your library or center is offering any of these in either virtual or in-person formats. Also, "European Holiday Markets" is on tap for 2021 in many libraries in case you missed it last year. Hope you enjoy them all!

Just released to libraries and community centers! The latest Savvy Sightseer Video Vacation, and the newest addition to the local parks series, takes us off Long Island to one of the area’s most important and impressive green spaces – Central Park! The New York City landmark is considered by some to be a “museum without walls” and “one of the most important works of art in America.” In this video, we explore the multi-faceted sides of this gem, which is so much more than a park - it's one with many surprising tales to tell! From its early beginnings as a marshy wasteland to its lush lawns, stunning structures, sculptures and iconic memorials, Central Park has evolved into a playground of sorts for all. We’ll stop by the Imagine mosaic, a tribute to John Lennon; Alice in Wonderland sculpture; century-old carousel; a Victorian-style “folly” and learn about the convoluted history of this pastoral marvel in the middle of the Big Apple!
Check my webpage, https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues, to see if your library or center is offering “Central Park: One Park with Many Stories to Tell.” If they aren’t, maybe mention it to the program coordinator so you, too, can explore Central Park’s many wonders and learn about its intriguing stories!

People have been so wonderful in their response to the Hey, Long Island, What's Up with That? video that a sequel is now ready! Like the first edition, this one includes a closer look at roadside question marks - those sites, memorials and curiosities we pass every day and wonder why they are there or what is the origin of their interesting names. In Part II, we visit over 20 spots, span a few centuries and look at Long Island's newest question mark! Even some stops viewers emailed me about are included, and their questions answered on this local Video Vacation! Libraries have only been notified today about the new listing, so check with your local librarian or my website: https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues in a few days to see if your library will be offering this video for you. Thank you for all the great suggestions of roadside question marks!

Despite loosening restrictions, international travel is still not on the horizon - except on a virtual basis! Check your local library to see if they have your ticket for a Savvy Sightseer Video Vacation to the southwestern part of Italy and towns along the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the third episode of the Savvy Sightseer's Bucket List series, we’ll start in the gateway seaside city of Sorrento, stop over at the Isle of Capri for its amazing caves, pop up to Pompeii - locked in time for thousands of years - wonder at the glistening Amalfi Coast towns and then zip over to Sicily, the island off Italy’s imaginary boot toe. To see if your library is among those offering this virtual trip, check my programs page: https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues. Ciao!

In all, there’s at least 70,000 acres of recreational and wooded parkland spread across Long Island, from Queens to Montauk. In this new series we will start by visiting five very different parks/preserves: Alley Pond in Queens, Christopher Morley in Nassau, and Connetquot River, Caleb Smith and David Weld in Suffolk. We’ll dive into why these particular pieces of land escaped development and became public places, their special histories and how they came by their names. You will find that the parks each have a unique story to tell! Check my website to see if your library is hosting this video: https://savvysightseer.wixsite.com/savvy/travelogues.
