Planning Your Serengeti Safari

1️⃣What is the temperature at the summit of Kilimanjaro?

The temperature at Uhuru Peak (the summit of Kilimanjaro) sits at around -5 or -6° C (or 23 to 21° F). There’s chances of more snow at the summit in winter, as discussed on among of our previous posts

2️⃣ Why climb Kilimanjaro at night?

This is a really good question. It may seem strange that we wake up in the middle of the night to make our way to the summit. Are we looking to make things even more difficult than they already are?! Don’t worry, there are a handful valid reasons behind the early start …
These are the reasons:
⭕️Its hard to sleep at altitude
⭕️There’s much ground to cover
⭕️All water at this elevation must be carried up
⭕️The sunrise at Stella Point is glorious
⭕️You climb with a head torch at night in the darkness so that you cannot see the challenge because it may disappoint you seeing where you are going with all the steepness and freezing

3️⃣ How long do we spend at the summit?

This is a very popular question, and most people are surprised to hear that you spend about 15 minutes or so at the summit. “But why?! We go all this way to spend just 15 minutes at the top?”
Again, there’s a reason for the way things are done. First and foremost, we don’t hang around at the summit for long because it’s cold and you are at very high altitude. We generally find that after 15 minutes of high fives, photographs and soaking in the view, people want to start moving again to warm up and avoid feeling sick.
Remember too that there’s a long way to still descend, and so we get on with that after taking in the scenery.

DOES CLIMBING KILIMANJARO INVOLVE TECHNICALITIES?

The trek up Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb. You do not require any mountaineering equipment to reach the summit. In fact, anyone in good physical condition can reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. You should be able to run for at least half an hour without feeling shortness of breath. You should also be able to walk for at least 2 hours in hilly terrains without feeling overly exhausted. No one with a sore throat, cold of breathing problems should go beyond 3000m. Anyone with heart or lung problems should consult his/her physician before attempting to climb Mt Kilimanjaro.

At 5896m Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain and one of the continent's magnificent sights, It has three main volcanic peaks, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. The name itself "Kilimanjaro" is a mystery wreathed in clouds. It might mean Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness or Mountain of Caravans.

Above the gently rolling hills and plateaux of northern Tanzania rises the snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, it’s slopes and glaciers shimmering above the rising clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the town of Moshi and is a protected area, carefully regulated for climbers to enjoy without leaving a trace of their presence. The mountain’s ecosystems are as strikingly beautiful as they are varied and diverse. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountain is farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava, and maize crops grown for subsistence and cash sale. A few larger coffee farms still exist on the lower slopes, but much of the area outside the national park has been subdivided into small plots. Once inside the park, thick lowland forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is harsh and barren, with rocks and ice the predominant features above a breathtaking African view.

But why climb Kilimanjaro? Well for one thing
1.) IT'S ONE OF THE "SEVEN SUMMITS" .
The name refers to the highest peak on each continent, and at 19,341' Kilimanjaro ranks as not only the highest mountain in Africa, but highest free- standing mountain in the world! That the serious achievement whether or not you are hardcore climber!
2.) YOU DONT NEED ANY TECHNICAL SKILL TO CLIMB IT; Realistically Kilimanjaro is a very long, very high altitude hike. Anyone who's reasonably fit can reach the summit; kids as young as 7 have done it, and an octogenarian couple aged 84 and 85 have also reached the top. You dont need special training ( or carabiners and ropes) to climb Kili, just the desire to reach the summit
3.) IT'S A SERIOUS CHALLENGE; We know we just said almost any one can do it. And they can ...but it will be a serious challenge reaching Uhuru peak is an achievement, you can be proud of it. If it were easy it wouldn't be such a special feeling .
4.) YOU'LL SEE THINGS YOU CAN'T SEE ANY WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD:
We've been focusing on the destination, but the journey up to Kilimanjaro is unforgetable. From the black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the rainforest canopy to the giant, alien looking groundsel plants in the motherland, Kilimanjaro is teeming with amazing flora, fauna and scenary. Much of it can be found no where else on earth. .
5.) THE VIEWS AT THE TOP ARE INDESCRIBABLE;
Have you ever heard the pharse "I feel like I'm top of the world?" It's so common that we think of it as a cliche, but one you reach the "Roof of Africa" actually looking down on the rolling banks of clouds below, you'll understand just how meaningful and beautful- those few words can be. Once you reach Uhuru peak see its Sparkling glaciers and the craggy spikes of Mawenzi floating above a cloud sea, you'll apperciate your accomplishment even more and hopefully snaps a few pictures.

Elephants are known for their incredible memory. Matriarchs will remember the trails and watering holes and how to navigate the seasons, all knowledge handed down by their ancestors for generations, and knowledge so vital for their survival.

What is the Serengeti famous for?🤷🏾🤷🏽‍♀️

In a nutshell, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is famous for being the location of the Great Wildlife Migration , which sees two million wildebeests, zebras and antelopes stretched across its plains. It's also an extremely large and wild game park, and is home to the Big Five.
