A brief review of general history:
we are in Italy, more precisely in central Italy, what was once the land of the Etruscans. Etruria.
A small zoom on the city of Perugia: on the border between the Umbrians and Etruscans, it has always played a very important role. According to Cato the Elder, Perugia was originally the seat of the Umbrians, particularly the Sarsinati. However, the urban fabric of Perugia is Etruscan, formed around the second half of the 6th century BC, and from the layout of the Etruscan necropolises we have indirect evidence of the expansion of the first city centre, which continued into the 5th and 4th centuries.
Some remains bear witness to the presence of this fascinating people: Porta Marzia, the Etruscan well, the Etruscan arch and the hypogeum of the volumni. Why miss the chance to enjoy this beauty?

Breve ripasso di storia generale:
ci troviamo in Italia, più precisamente nel centro Italia, quella che un tempo era la terra degli Etruschi. L’Etruria.
Piccolo zoom sulla città di Perugia: a confine tra umbri ed etruschi ha sempre avuto un ruolo molto importante. Secondo Catone il Vecchio Perugia fu in origine sede degli umbri, in particolare dei sarsinati. Il tessuto urbano di Perugia è però etrusco, formatosi intorno alla seconda metà del VI secolo a.C., e dalla disposizione delle necropoli etrusche abbiamo una testimonianza indiretta dell'espansione del primo nucleo cittadino, che prosegue nei secoli V e IV.
Alcuni resti testimoniano la presenza di questo affascinante popolo: Porta Marzia, il pozzo Etrusco, l’arco Etrusco e l’ipogeo dei volumni. Perché lasciarsi scappare la possibilità di godere di questa bellezza?

I am sure that here it will be full of onion lovers like me! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water....
just last night at a restaurant I tasted a great onion jam to go with the cheese plate, and I thought I could prepare it too. Below I leave you my recipe.
Oh and if you want some advice, from September 5 to 10 and 12 to 17 there is the onion festival in Cannara. Take advantage of it and maybe see you there....

INGREDIENTS:
1 kg of Cannara red onions.
400 g of brown sugar
20 ml cognac
20 ml balsamic vinegar

PREPARATION:
Peel the onions and slice them thinly, helping yourself with a mandoline.
Place the onions in a pan, add the sugar and let macerate for 4 hours in the refrigerator.
Put the onions on the stove and cook over very low heat for 45 minutes, with an immersion blender blend the onions, then add the cognac and balsamic vinegar, continue cooking for another 45 minutes.
Pour the boiling jam into sterilized jars, seal with new capsules and place upside down to create a vacuum.
Allow to cool and store in the pantry.

Io sono sicura che qui è pieno di amanti della cipolla come me! Solo a pensarci ho l’acquolina in bocca…
proprio ieri sera a ristorante ho assaggiato un’ottima marmellata di cipolle per accompagnare i formaggi e ho pensato di ricrearla anche io. Qui sotto vi lascio la mia ricetta.
Ah e se volete un consiglio, dal 5 al 10 e dal 12 al 17 settembre c’è la festa della cipolla a Cannara. Approfittatene e magari ci vediamo lì…

INGREDIENTI:
1 kg di cipolle rosse di Cannara
400 g di zucchero di canna
20 ml di cognac
20 ml di aceto balsamico

PREPARAZIONE:
Sbucciate le cipolle e tagliatele sottilmente, aiutandovi con una mandolina. Mettete le cipolle in un tegame, unite lo zucchero e lasciate macerare per 4 ore in frigo.

Mettete le cipolle sul fuoco e fate cuocere a fuoco molto basso per 45 minuti, con un mixer ad immersione frullate le cipolle, poi unite il cognac e l’aceto balsamico, proseguite la cottura ancora per 45 minuti.

Versate la confettura bollente in vasetti sterilizzati, chiudete con delle capsule nuove e mettete a testa in giù per creare il sottovuoto.

Fate raffreddare e conservate in dispensa.

The Mercato delle Gaite draws inspiration from the ancient division of Bevagna (PG) into four neighborhoods called Gaite. The administrative organization of the city in medieval times was based on it.
The purpose of the event is to reconstruct, with the greatest historical relevance and abundance of detail, the daily life of the town's inhabitants in the period between 1250 and 1350. For ten days, at the end of June, Bevagna takes a plunge into this remote past: the ancient stores of medieval trades reopen their doors and resume their activities; the streets are populated with bevanati who, in period clothing, live the daily life of their ancestors eating, working, playing just like them.
The spirit of competition is at the basis of the lively Event and is embodied in the participation in 4 competitions: Crafts Competition, Gastronomic Competition, Market Competition and Archery Competition. The Mercato delle Gaite is now counted among the most important historical events in Umbria and is part of the Regional Association of Historical Events.
And speaking of crafts, Mestieri…
I take you on a journey to discover the ancient Crafts. A plunge into the past to discover techniques and tools inside the charming medieval workshops of Bevagna, located in the historic center of the village and open all year round.
Art masters and expert artisans unveil the secrets of the ancient Medieval Crafts, showing the stages and working tools of the production of bambagina paper, beeswax candles, paintings and silk fabrics. Guided tours and workshops allow audiences of all ages to savor, learn and experience the secrets of Medieval Ars.
Mastro Cecco's Paper Mill - La Cartiera di Mastro Cecco
The large water-powered machine, the hydraulic pile with multiple hammers, the dimness of cramped spaces, the rags to macerate, the intense smell of animal glue, the calander that smooths the surface that will accommodate refined texts and drawings. In the Paper Mill, the multiple and complex stages are recounted, leading to the production of sheets of bambagina paper.
The Waxworks - La Cereria
The beeswax with its intense color and multiple shades, its unmistakable fragrance, the h**p wicks, the flame that melts, the wheel that turns. At every turn a casting. And turn after turn, pour after pour, the slender candle is formed. The skilled hands of the craftsman in the Cereria choose two and join them in an embrace to form the "duplero": a candle with double flame and double life.
The Painter - Il Dipintore
The Painter, the workshop of a thousand colors. Boards, binders, brushes are prepared. Pigments married to egg yolk produce the fine mixtures to represent stars and heavens, angels and madonnas, princes and princesses. A place where people learned and worked. In the Painter's workshop, the stages of tempera on board are experimented with and the secrets of medieval art are revealed.
The Silk Factory - Il Setificio
In the Silk Factory, the precious thread extracted from the cocoons through reeling is twisted in the great human-powered twisting machine, the first complex operating machine man ever built. Then, having become stronger, rounder and more regular, it arrives in the hands of the weavers, who realize the miracle of silk fabric.

Il Mercato delle Gaite trae ispirazione dall’antica divisione di Bevagna (PG) in quattro quartieri denominati Gaite. Su di essa si basava l’organizzazione amministrativa della città in epoca medievale.
Lo scopo della manifestazione è quello di ricostruire, con la maggiore attinenza storica e dovizia di particolari, la vita quotidiana degli abitanti del borgo nel periodo compreso tra il 1250 e 1350. Per dieci giorni, alla fine di giugno, Bevagna fa un tuffo in questo remoto passato: le antiche botteghe dei mestieri medievali riaprono i loro battenti e riprendono le attività; le strade si popolano di bevanati che in abiti d’epoca vivono la quotidianità dei loro avi mangiando, lavorando, giocando proprio come loro.
Lo spirito di competizione è alla base della animata Manifestazione e si concretizza nella partecipazione a 4 gare: Gara dei Mestieri, Gara Gastronomica, Gara del Mercato e Gara di tiro con l’arco. Il Mercato delle Gaite è oggi annoverato tra le più importanti manifestazioni storiche dell’Umbria e fa parte dell’Associazione Regionale Manifestazioni Storiche.
E a proposito dei mestieri…
Vi porto in un viaggio alla scoperta degli antichi Mestieri. Un tuffo nel passato per scoprire tecniche e strumenti di lavoro all’interno delle suggestive botteghe medievali di Bevagna, situate nel centro storico del borgo e aperto tutto l’anno.
Maestri dell’arte ed esperti artigiani svelano i segreti degli antichi Mestieri Medievali, mostrando le fasi e gli strumenti di lavoro della produzione di carta bambagina, candele di cera d’api, dipinti e tessuti di seta. Visite guidate e laboratori permettono ad un pubblico di ogni età di assaporare, conoscere e sperimentare i segreti dell’Ars medievale.
La Cartiera di Mastro Cecco
La grande macchina azionata dall’acqua, la pila idraulica a magli multipli, la penombra di spazi angusti, gli stracci a macerare, l’odore intenso della colla animale, il calandro che rende levigata la superficie che accoglierà testi e disegni raffinati. Nella Cartiera si raccontano le molteplici e complesse fasi, che portano a produrre fogli di carta bambagina.
La Cereria
La cera d’api dal colore intenso e dalle molteplici sfumature, il suo profumo inconfondibile, gli stoppini di canapa, la fiamma che scioglie, la ruota che gira. Ad ogni giro una colata. E giro dopo giro, colata dopo colata, si forma l’esile candela. Le mani esperte dell’artigiano nella Cereria ne sceglie due e le unisce in un abbraccio fino a formare il “duplero”: candela con doppia fiamma e doppia durata.
Il Dipintore
Il Dipintore, la bottega dai mille colori. Si preparano tavole, leganti, pennelli. Pigmenti sposati a tuorlo d’uovo producono i raffinati impasti per rappresentare stelle e cieli, angeli e madonne, principi e principesse. Luogo dove si imparava e si lavorava. Nella bottega del Dipintore si sperimentano le fasi della tempera su tavola e si svelano i segreti dell’arte medievale.
Il Setificio
Nel Setificio il prezioso filo estratto dai bozzoli attraverso la trattura viene ritorto nel grande torcitoio a trazione umana, la prima macchina operativa complessa che l’uomo abbia mai costruito. Poi, divenuto più forte, rotondo e regolare, arriva nelle mani delle tessitrici, che realizzano il miracolo del tessuto di seta.

Have you ever seen a golden chariot drawn by twelve horses and watched over by a hen with five thousand chicks, also made of gold?
Well neither have I, none really. Until now at least...
Legend has it that King Porsenna was buried, according to his wishes, in a mausoleum beneath which was a labyrinth so intricate that it would make that of Crete's Minotaur pale. His remains would lie on a golden chariot and escorted by a hen and 5,000 chicks all made of gold.
What can be visited today under the National Archaeological Museum in Chiusi is, of course, not the labyrinth of legends. It is a series of tunnels, discovered in the 1920s, that wind through the underground passages of the city of Chiusi; created by the Etruscans in the 5th century B.C., they served as a drainage and water supply system. A tower was erected above the cistern in the 12th century to defend it, which later became the cathedral's bell tower. The historical and artistic importance of the tunnels is considerable: but no traces of Porsenna's treasure have been found inside them.
It is said, however, that on certain stormy evenings, or during full moon nights, one can hear in the distance the chirping of chicks that have magically come back to life, and which would lead to the underground treasure. Perhaps the golden chicks are still hidden somewhere in the countryside of what was once ancient Etruria, waiting to be unearthed: or perhaps it is just another story, which the legendary figure of Porsenna has been carrying around for two and a half millennia.

Avete mai visto un cocchio d’oro trainato da dodici cavalli e vegliato da una chioccia con cinquemila pulcini, anch’essi d’oro?
Beh nemmeno io, nessuno in realtà. Fino ad ora almeno…
La leggenda narra che il re Porsenna sia stato sepolto, secondo le sue volontà, in un mausoleo sotto il quale si snodava un labirinto talmente intricato da far impallidire quello del Minotauro di Creta. Le sue spoglie sarebbero adagiate su un cocchio d’oro e scortate da una gallina e 5000 pulcini tutti d’oro.
Quello che oggi si può visitare sotto il Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Chiusi non è, ovviamente, il labirinto delle leggende. Si tratta di una serie di cunicoli, scoperti negli anni ’20, che si snodano nei sotterranei della città di Chiusi; creati dagli Etruschi nel V secolo a.C., fungevano da sistema di drenaggio e approvvigionamento idrico. Sopra la cisterna, nel XII secolo, venne eretta una torre a difesa, divenuta poi il campanile della cattedrale. L’importanza storica e artistica dei cunicoli è notevole: ma al loro interno non sono state rinvenute tracce del tesoro di Porsenna.
Si dice però, che in certe sere di tempesta, o durante le notti di plenilunio, si possano sentire in lontananza i pigolii dei pulcini tornati magicamente in vita, e che condurrebbero al tesoro sotterraneo. Forse i pulcini d’oro sono ancora nascosti da qualche parte, nelle campagne di quella che fu l’antica Etruria, in attesa di essere riportati alla luce: o forse è soltanto un’altra storia, che la leggendaria figura di Porsenna si porta appresso da due millenni e mezzo.

The legend of . Fortunatus, written in the second half of the 7th century or so, tells of Fortunatus, a priest of the of (Santa Maria di Turrita, south of , to the present day). St. Fortunatus worked as a farmer and was known for his charity with the poor. When he died, around 395, he was buried in a place called "Angellus," which later appeared to be the site of St. Roch.
Twenty years after his death, St. Severus, an official from nearby Civitas Martana, stopped at St. Fortunatus' grave on his way to Ravenna, where a trial awaited him. He promised to build a church there if St. Fortunatus secured his acquittal. The absolution came, and he built the first Church there (his remains had been moved here after his first burial in Agellus).
The frescoes above the portal by Benozzo Gozzoli, dating from around 1450, include:
A Madonna and Child with Saints Francis and Bernardino of Siena and two angels in the lunettes.
The fresco fragment in the loggia to the right of the church entrance was part of a larger decorative program attributed to Tiberio d' Assisi
The frescoes in the chapel on the right were largely destroyed in the 17th century, when the present altar was built.
Two fragments of the original frescoes remain:
Part of a Madonna and Child Enthroned with Musical Angels to the right of the altar. An inscription at the base on the right of the throne identifies the artist, Benozzo Gozzoli, and the date.
Saint Fortunato enthroned forms the altarpiece. The saint holds the rod he had used to guide his oxen, which miraculously exploded and turned into a leaf when he was stuck in the earth after his death.
Fragments of figures of angels kneeling at the sides are visible.

La leggenda di Fortunato, scritta nella seconda metà del 7° secolo circa, racconta di Fortunato, prete della di (Santa Maria di Turrita, a sud di , ad oggi). San Fortunato lavorava come agricoltore ed era conosciuto per la sua ca**tà con i poveri. Alla sua morte, intorno al 395, venne seppellito in un luogo chiamato “Angellus”, che in un secondo momento sembrò costituire il sito di San Rocco.
20 anni dopo la sua morte, San Severo, un ufficiale della vicina Civitas Martana, si fermò sulla tomba di San Fortunato durante il suo viaggio a Ravenna, dove lo aspettava un processo. Promise di costruire una Chiesa in quel luogo se San Fortunato avesse assicurato la sua assoluzione. L’assoluzione arrivò e lui costruì la prima Chiesa in questo luogo (i suoi resti erano stati spostati qui dopo la prima sepoltura ad Agello).
Gli affreschi sopra il portale di Benozzo Gozzoli, risalenti al 1450 circa, includono:
Una Madonna con Bambino con i Santi Francesco e Bernardino da Siena e due angeli nella lunette
Il frammento di affresco nella loggia, a destra dell’entrata della Chiesa, era parte di un programma decorativo più ampio attribuito a Tiberio d' Assisi
Gli affreschi nella ca****la a destra furono in gran parte distrutti nel XVII secolo, quando venne costruito l’altare attuale.
Rimangono due frammenti degli affreschi originali:
Parte di una Madonna con Bambino in trono con angeli musicali a destra dell’altare. Un’iscrizione alla base, sulla destra del trono, identifica l’artista, Benozzo Gozzoli, e la data.
San Fortunato in trono forma la pala dell’altare. Il Santo tiene la v***a che aveva usato per guidare i suoi buoi, che miracolosamente esplose e si trasformò in una foglia quando rimase bloccato nella terra dopo la sua morte.
Sono visibili frammenti di figure di angeli inginocchiati ai lati.
