🇬🇷📍Today’s special guest is the Parthenon, located in the Acropolis of Athens!

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical importance. The most famous building is the Parthenon.

The Parthenon is a former temple that was dedicated to the goddess Athena during the fifth century BC. The Parthenon was built under the general supervision of Phidias, who also was in charge of the sculptural decoration. The architects Ictinos and Callicrates began their work in 447, and the building was substantially completed by 432.
One of the main architectural features of the building is its Doric style with Ionic elements.

It contained some important sculptures in its interior, and many of those are now located in the Acropolis Museum. The most impressive sculpture, though, was the chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos sculpted by Phidias.

The Parthenon and the Acropolis of Athens are definitely two of the most remarkable and popular attractions in Athens and in Greece, in general. One’s visit to Athens cannot be complete without visiting the Acropolis as well as the Acropolis Museum.

🏛 Interesting fact: The Parthenon was quite colorful back then. Archaeologists and historians agree that the Parthenon was painted in many bright colors!

📆 Bonus fact: Entrance to the Acropolis of Athens is free for all visitors on specific days of the year, such as the last weekend of September (European Heritage Days)! Make sure to check online before your visit.

🇪🇸📍 Today we will visit Park Güell, in Barcelona!
It is definitely one of the most impressive and popular attractions in Barcelona. It was originally designed to be a housing site, based on the vision of Eusebi Güell, inspired by the English garden city movement. Güell assigned the design of the park to Antoni Gaudí, “the face of Catalan modernism”.
The park’s construction started in 1900 and lasted until 1914. It was officially opened as a public park in 1926. In 1984, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site under "Works of Antoni Gaudí".
Even though it started as a housing site, only two houses were built eventually and the project failed. It was then converted into a municipal garden, offering peace and calmness to the citizens and tourists, who would like to escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city, and admire the architectural elements as well as the landscapes of the park.
🌳 Fun fact: Antoni Gaudí himself used to live in one of the show houses in the park!
🦜 Bonus fact: There are several kinds of wildlife living in the park: non-native parrots, short-toed eagles, and more!

🇮🇹📍When in Rome, you can’t miss the Colosseum!
The Colosseum is the largest amphitheater in the world and it is over 1,900 years old! It is also one of the New 7 Wonders of the World (and anyone who has visited it, can definitely approve of that)!
This iconic structure has hosted a variety of events, such as gladiator contests, animal hunts, and re-enactments of famous battles.
🍕 Fun fact: To protect the spectators from the scorching sun and heat of Ancient Rome, there was an awning that could be pulled over the top of the seating area to provide shade. This awning was called “velarium”!
🍝 Bonus fact: Emperors of the time, organized and paid for the events hosted in the Colosseum themselves, in order to gain popularity. Entry was free for all citizens and sometimes there was free food as well!

The Greek revolution began in 1821, followed by the war of independence (1821–1829), where the Greeks won independence for Greece from the Ottoman Empire. Greece was under the Ottoman rule for nearly 400 years since the Ottoman Turks invaded Constantinople (known today as Istanbul), capital of the Byzantine Empire, in 1453. The Greek struggle had elicited strong sympathy in Europe, and many leading intellectuals had promoted the Greek cause! And today, even though humanity is going through a rough time and celebrations must be limited, this day is celebrated, not only in Greece but globally, recognizing the struggles and sacrifices of the Greek people.
