Feeling like summer here at the St. Regis Chicago!

We had a blast with our partners from at the recently opened last night. This property marks the brands debut in the Midwest, and is the tallest in the world to be built by a female architect. You can definitely feel the boss babe vibes throughout the property, but they’re best felt on the balcony 😉 Thanks again to Liane and team for a wonderful event.

Want to experience it for yourself? When you book through Unleashed LTC not only are you guaranteed the best rate, but you have access to unique amenities. Reach out for more info ✨

This temple is the location of the largest museum dedicated to an animal in the entire world! Although the Temple of Kom Ombo was created to worship both the ancient Egyptian god Horus and another ancient Egyptian god Sobek were worshipped at the Temple of Kom Ombo, we wanted to take this time to focus on Sobek (and the crocodiles who died in his honor!).

The current day city of Luxor (ancient day city of Thebes), is home to the Luxor Temple which is where many pharaohs of Egypt were crowned! The temple itself is dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship, and serves as a hallmark of Egyptian royalty. In the center of our image, you can see the Avenue of Sphinxes. This avenue once spanned over one and a half miles and connected the Karnak temple complex to the temple of Luxor! Not all of these Sphinxes have been uncovered (yet), but we feel lucky to have seen parts of the avenue at both. The top of our image showcases the Court of Amonhotep III as it leads into the Hypostyle Hall. The northern end of this (behind our camera) originally was the entrance for this temple. On the right of our image, we again return to tales of obelisks. Interestingly enough, there used to be TWO obelisks marking the gates of Luxor. Only one remains. The second one was given to France by the ruler of Ottoman Egypt in the 1800s in exchange for a French mechanical clock. Funnily enough, the clock arrived in faulty condition. It remains to this day in Cairo Citadel and is still not working. As for the Obelisk in Paris, it serves as a stunning centerpiece for the Place de la Concorde. All in all, definitely a must-see venture for those traveling in Egypt.

In the ancient city of Thebes, the Karnak Temple Complex was (and is) composed of a huge mix of temples, chapels and pylons. This area was under constant renovation and construction for 2,000 years, up until the Romans took control of Egypt. During the Eighteenth Dynasty, the main central area of this complex was dedicated to the god Amun, the ancient god of sun and air. To the south, Amun’s wife, the goddess Mut (literally meaning Mother in Ancient Egyptian) was the focus of the area. To the North, a precinct was dedicated to Montu, god of war, and to the East, the “Aten” (meaning sun-disk). The image on the right shows the remains of the “Great Hypostyle Hall,” and covers an area large enough to fit Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral! There are 134 columns (some of which are up to 70 feet high), and are covered with hieroglyphs telling stories and tales of Egyptian heroes. The obelisk to the top left is the 2nd tallest surviving Ancient Egyptian Obelisk in the world (the first was taken to Rome). Interestingly enough out of the 21 ancient obelisks still standing, Egypt itself can only claim 5. You can also find Ancient Egyptian obelisks in various cities around the world (Istanbul, London, New York, Paris and as mentioned previously, Rome), which (in some cases) were given as gifts from the Egyptian governate but also were collected as trophies for invading forces.

We got a little thirsty during our morning exploration and our guide pointed out the oasis that is the 9 Pyramids Lounge . It was a great place to get some tea, some water, and some relaxation before we got back to exploring! And come on… the VIEW. That panorama in the middle of our image shows the restaurant (and the pyramids) just as we experienced. Lounging about right in front of the Pyramids?! It was amazing. With a beautiful view AND friendly service, we highly recommend stopping by next time you find yourself in Egypt!

The Great Pyramid is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World AND the only one that is still intact. The Great Pyramid was built as a tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu, and was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over three thousand years. It remains one of the major recognizable hallmarks of Ancient Egyptian civilization, and is located not far outside of Cairo, Egypt’s capital. On the top left of our image, you can see the Great Sphinx of Giza, which is wildly believed to represent Kahfre, Khufu’s son. Interestingly enough, the Greeks reference the Sphinx in their mythology as a “mythological beast with the head of a woman, a falcon, a cat or a sheep and the body of a lion with the wings of an eagle.” Even though this Sphinx is believed to be the inspiration for the mythical Sphinx, Ancient Egypt’s Sphinxes differed from the Greeks by usually including a man’s head and no wings. This Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in all of Egypt. The image on the right is the Grand Gallery, which is the upward slope towards the King’s Chamber. It is quite a feat that the Ancient Egyptians were able to construct such a ‘staircase’ within the pyramids, without compromising the pyramids structure. The image between the Sphinx and the Grand Gallery, is of the King’s Burial Chamber, the final resting place for Pharaoh Khufu. Although the exterior of his tomb is quite Great (haha), this room is fairly bare. Egyptologists believe that the unique and decorated sarcophagi traditionally used by pharaohs in this case must have been lost on the way to this final resting place, and a hastily made granite replacement was used instead.

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, otherwise known as the Museum of Egyptian Antiques, currently houses the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic artifacts, including the treasures of King Tutankhamun, items buried with other famous pharaohs and monuments to the Ancient Egyptian gods. Anubis (the dog pictured on the right) protects the graves of almost every tomb of importance in Ancient Egypt, in addition to his duties as god of cemeteries and embalming. The black pyramidion, or capstone, located at the top of the image was created for Amenemhat III, an important pharaoh who ruled during the Middle Kingdom’s golden age. We were so fortunate to see the countless treasures in this classic museum before many of them are moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza which will have its grand opening in 2021. Indeed, the mummies already have left the building in a dramatic procession through the streets of Cairo.

15/01/2021

On our journey through Egypt, we made sure to stop at Saqqara, an important historical burial site as well as a current archeological dig site. Saqqara is home to the 4,700-year-old Step Pyramid (top right), which is the world’s OLDEST surviving pyramid. This pyramid, called the Pyramid of Djoser, was built for the first king of the Third Dynasty of Egypt and is even older than the Pyramids of Giza! Many structures have been excavated for one to walk through, as pictured in the center of our image, and we can confirm it’s a truly amazing way to travel through history (literally AND figuratively). However, as you can see in the top left of the image, Saqqara’s vast history is still being discovered to this very day. “Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb,” which was released on Netflix less than three months ago, covers a team of archeologists who, at this very site, uncovered “Egypt’s most significant find in almost 50 years,” during the fall of 2020! Similarly, the Smithsonian Channel docuseries “Tomb Hunters” covers this very spot, and is scheduled to air in 2021. Personally, we can’t wait to further explore Saqqara at home when this series gets released.

14/01/2021

Founded in 3100 BC, the city of Memphis was the capital of Ancient Egypt after the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. The site is a short drive from Cairo and has been undergoing massive archeological excavations for the past two centuries. In the top left, you can see an alabaster Sphinx, which once stood outside a massive Ancient temple. Hatshepsut—the second female pharaoh of Egypt—was the inspiration for this Sphinx (or so we were told)! Although this Sphinx was not created for Ramses II, he liked it enough to overlay his own cartouche (a group of Egyptian hieroglyphs that would represent the ‘autograph’ of a monarch) over the original. Below the Sphinx, you can see Ramses II’s own colossus. We simply showcase his face, but the entire stature measures about 35 feet long– definitely taller than both of us. The two figures on the right represent a Pharaoh and his wife from a later period, holding hands, and were among many of the granite statues/tablets showcased in this museum.

This beautiful Victorian palace built on a pink granite cliff overlooking the Nile in Upper Egypt is one of the top rated luxury hotels in Egypt. Yes, those are views FROM OUR BALCONY. This iconic building was created in 1899 to house European travelers—or in our case American 😉—which included Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, Queen Noor of Jordan and others (we’ll get into that more in our next post). Needless to say, we were in good company! The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan is situated in the Nubian Desert with an awe-inspiring view of Elephantine Island and when that is paired with luxurious accommodations and service, there are very few hotels that compare to the Sofitel’s elevated platform of modernity and history.

We got to explore even more of Hawai’i’s stunning landscapes by taking the route up Maui’s North Shore, otherwise known as West Maui’s Road to Hana. Personally, we like to call it the Road from the Ritz 😉. We made sure to include Honolua Bay in our trip, as it is an important ancient Hawai’ian fishing bay. The beach in the distance, Punalau, gets great high surf during the winter months, and it was CROWDED with surfers when we went! Interestingly enough, we saw tons of pine trees, despite them not being native to Hawai’i. We found out that these trees were planted by British sailors (Captain Cook most notoriously) so that the British could return and repair their boats. The Nakalele (meaning leaning) blowhole, located a bit beyond Nakalele Point, erupts frequently with high tide and surf! It was a beautiful drive and one often overlooked because of the popularity of the Road to Hana.

VISITING HAWAI’I NOTE: Although one might want to find a keepsake to remember their trip by, it is important to not disturb the dynamic landscape of Hawai’i by displacing local elements, even the rocks. Legend has it that the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, Pele, puts a curse on anyone who takes rocks or sand from the Hawaiian Islands (It’s also illegal). Learning about other cultures is one of OUR favorite reasons to travel, and we hope that you keep in mind the local culture while you travel as well!
