A few weeks ago, Nepal mountaineering history was made when Mingma G Sherpa from Rolwaling valley, climbed Shishapangma (8,027 m / 26,335 ft) and completing his quest to climb all fourteen 8,000m peaks without supplementary oxygen. Mingma was one of the first people to climb K2 in winter along with many of his other great mountaineering achievements. Throughout my years trekking and climbing in the Himalayas, I have been extremely lucky, honored and feel very privileged to become friends, climb, trek and work with the incredible Sherpas from the Rolwaling valley, Dolakha. They are some of the friendliest, most humble and welcoming group of people I have ever met. I have learnt so much from the super strong and skilled Sherpas in this region. They have broken so many climbing records, many are IFMGA Guides and Rolwaling is one of the most beautiful and peaceful valleys of the Himalayas. Congratulations to all the Sherpas and Nepalese people for their amazing achievements over the last few weeks, months and years.
We are looking forward to many more great adventures with you in Nepal and other mountains around the world.

High Above the Clouds! One of the more challenging days on the Umbwe, Lemoshe and Machame routes on Kilimanjaro which all meet at Baranco camp. We leave Baranco camp (3,970 m / 13,024 ft) and make the steep scramble over the Baranco wall. While tackling this section, there is a kissing rock, (bit different to kissing the Blarney stone in Co. Cork Ireland). Once past this section the terrain flattens out and you navigate your way through some boulder fields. You begin to realise how high you are with amazing views of Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru in the distance while you make your way Karanga Camp (4,050 m / 13,287 ft) for a beautiful sunset.

Big congratulations to Dawa Yangzum Sherpa bahini, climber & IFMGA guide from Rolwaling valley, who has made history by becoming the first Nepali woman to successfully climb all 14 peaks above 8,000m. On the 9th of October, she completed this amazing achievement by summiting Mt. Shishapangma in Tibet. I first met Dawa while climbing Everest in 2012, which was her first 8,000m peak. Since then, she has achieved many great feats, including being one of three Nepali women who climbed Mt K2 (8,611m) under the Women for Change Expedition in 2014 along with being the youngest woman to climb K2. She is also the first Nepali woman to climb Annapurna I without supplemental oxygen and the first Asian woman to become IFMGA guide. I am delighted to hear of your success and wishing you all the best for your future projects and climbing career.

Jambo! The landscape changes dramatically while trekking from Umbwe Cave camp (2,900 m / 9,514 ft) towards Barranco camp (3,970 m / 13,024 ft). The first few hours you are in beautiful forest with some wildlife, while the trees and plants protect you from the strong sun. As you gain altitude, there is much less vegetation, and you are in more of a desert like landscape. but are rewarded with incredible views of Kilimanjaro and some great picnic spots.

l would like to send a big congratulations to my good friend, Sirbaz Khan! I am delighted for you to become the first Pakastani climber to climb all fourteen 8,000m peaks. An amazing and inspirational achievement. WOW!

I had to pleasure and honour to meet and climb alongside with Shirbaz on Manaslu Expedition in 2022. Manaslu conditions that year were not very favourable and we turned around from camp 4. I was amazed at Shirbazs strength, determination, and humility. While climbing to camp 4 on Manaslu without oxygen, I could not believe how fast he was while we climbed in bad weather on one of the harder sections of the climb.

The last of his fourteen peaks was Shishapangma, which he made the summit on 4th October. He has climbed twelve 8,000m peaks without oxygen.

I look forward to visiting and climbing with you in Pakistan soon. Safe travels back home and enjoy the celebrations.

We are very sad to hear the news of the floods in Nepal. Hoping all our Sherpa family and Nepalese friends are safe and that the rain stops and floods recede. Wishing for better conditions and weather for the rest of the season and future years. Furtemba Sherpa (IFMGA Guide and World Sherpas director) standing on the summit of Island peak. (6,189 m / 20,305 ft in the Khumbu valley. All though classified as a trekking peak, there is a mix of ice and rock scrambling along with climbing and abseiling on fixed line up a 60-70 degree slope before you reach the summit ridge. You do not have to have any mountaineering experience to climb this mountain but need to be strong physically and mentally and of course be a with a good team. Our team will do a half day rope skills and basic mountaineering training with you in our base camp the day before the summit push to get your ready for the climb ahead. Join Furtemba Sherpa and the World Sherpas team November 2024 or in 2025 and climb Island peak. For more information click on link below or get in touch today.

Hakuna Matata! The Umbwe route on Kilimanjaro is an magnificent option although more challenging than a lot of the other routes on the mountain. We chose to acclimatise on Mt Meru, before going to Kilimanjaro to be ready for the challenge. For the first few days, we had the trail and camps all to ourselves. We started trekking on the southern side of Kilimanjaro and made our way through spectacular rainforests before reaching Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850 m / 9,350 ft) for a delicious dinner and good nights rest.

Climbing Ama Dablam, - Mother's Necklace, (6,812 m / 22,349 ft) is one of our favourite climbs in the Khumbu valley. As your trek in to Everest Base camp you can see its spectacular ridges in the eastern sky. Sunrise, climbing the South West ridge of the challenging Ama Dablam. In the 2nd photo, you can see the start of Mushroom ridge. Once over this obstacle , a short break, and onto climbing past the Dablam (hanging Glacier) before the last push to the summit. Mt Meru (4,562m / 14,962ft) is a stratovolcano located west of Kilimanjaro. It is the 2nd highest mountain in Tanzania and 5th highest in Africa. We climb the Momella route on the eastern side of the mountain. In the 2nd photo you can see Kilimanjaro in the background as the sun is rising. A stratovolcano is conical volcano built up of many layers of hardened lava. Startovolcanos are characterised by their steep profile with a summit crater. After leaving saddle hut (3,500m / 11,482ft) early in the morning, you ascend to Rhino Point. Named after a Rhino who climbed to this point to escape poachers, but died due to lack of food and water at this altitude. From here, there are some rock scrambles and traverses, climb the spectacular crater ridge, until you come to the point of no return, the steep ascent to the summit.(we all returned safely). Climbing Mt Meru is an incredible experience and very different to Kilimanjaro but well worth the effort. An amazing peak to climb for acclimatisation or for a different option to Kilimanjaro.

Little Meru (3,820 m, 12,532ft) serves as great acclimatisation before climbing Mt Meru. It takes between 2-3 hours from saddle hut 3,500m / 11,482 ft) and is relatively easy walking. There are some great views of Mt Meru and Kilimanjaro. After climbing little Meru, people get some rest and prepare to leave that night or very early next morning to climb Mt Meru.

Mambo (“Hi” in Swahili)! All went well during our acclimatisation walk up to Saddle Hut (3,500 m / 11,482 ft). The first half of our trek was under shade while we trekked through the jungle. Didn’t come across any buffaloes but felt safe with our armed park ranger, Oswald. As we got higher, there was less vegetation, but we were rewarded with great views of little Meru and Mt Meru.

No worries. (Swahili language). We left Momella gate (1,500 m / 4,921 ft) around midday and started our trek up the quieter northern circuit, through the buffalo glades. We got a little close for comfort to a herd of buffalo’s whom liked some of the groups red colours. A few hours trek through the rainforest, we arrived safely at our place of rest for the night Miriakamba hut (2,500 m / 8,202 ft) with some beautiful views of Mt Meru.

Very excited to be heading back to Africa. It’s been a while since I was last on this continent. Really looking forward to seeing our friends in Tanzania, climbing Mt Meru (4,562 m / 14,968 ft), along with attempting the Umbwe route on the highest mountain in Africa and one of the seven summits of the world, Kilimanjaro (5,895 m / 19,341 ft).

Lobuche Peak East (6,119 m / 20,075 ft) is located just behind Lobuche village in the Khumbu valley. There are two main peaks, Lobuche East and Lobuche West (6,145 m / 20,160ft). Most people climb Lobuche East Peak. Lobuche East peak is one of the more popular 6,000 m peaks in the Khumbu valley, along with Island and Mera Peak. Although popular and classified as a trekking peak, one must not take the peak for granted. Being prepared physically and mentally, having the right gear and knowing how to use it, and of course being with a good team are all key factors for the safety and success of the climb. Like every mountain there are always challenges to overcome and some risk. After doing some rope skills training and preparation in our base camp for the climb ahead, we leave early in the morning for our summit push. Once on the summit, there are amazing views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cholatse and many more beautiful Himalayan peaks. Join the World Sherpas team this October / November and climb this beautiful peak. For more details on our Everest Base Camp & Lobuche peak trip, see link below or get in touch.

I would like to thank Mountaineering Ireland and Patrick O'Sullivan for publishing an article on our Cholatse Expedition. Cholatse is an amazing climb and one of the hidden gems of the Himalayas. I have known Patrick for nearly 15 years and always enjoyed catching up with him to share stories from the Himalayas. I'm sorry to hear that he is retiring from editor of Irish Mountain Log. He did an amazing job with the Irish Mountain Log. I always look forward to reading the many trekking and climbing articles and delighted to have been able to contribute to magazine over the years. Patrick first went to Pheriche in 1980, on his way to EBC. He worked in the HRA clinic there in the post monsoon season of 1983. He is a doctor by profession but has a great passion for the mountains not only in Ireland but all around the world. Wishing you the best for your future endeavours and hope to see you in Dublin or the mountains in the coming years. You can read a version of the Cholatse article published on our website and check out the Cholatse video on the link below. If you would like to join the World Sherpas team to climb Cholatse this October/ November, get in touch today and check out our website for more details on the Expedition.

The Rolwaling valley is one of our shorter treks but one of the most spectacular and peaceful journeys through the majestic Himalayas. Located east-central Nepal along the Tibet border in the Gaurishankar region. Travel through traditional Sherpa villages such as Simigaun, Dongang, Beding (middle picture) and Naa. Melungste (7,181m / 23,560 ft) is the highest peak in the valley but there are over fifty 6,000m peaks in the area. This valley has a very special place in our hearts. We count ourselves very lucky and honoured to trek, climb, work, and be great friends with the amazing Sherpas from this valley throughout our years in the Himalayas. Join our team this October for this spectacular trek with options for beginner peak climb or trek one of the harder high passes in Nepal, Tachi Lapcha Pass (5,750 m / 18,864 ft)
For more details on trek see link below or get in touch for more information.

Climbing from camp 2 (6.400 m / 21,000 ft) to camp 3 (7,200 m / 23,625 ft) is one of the shorter and easier sections when climbing Manaslu (8th highest mountain in the world), but as always with every high mountain, the conditions, weather and altitude can make the climb challenging and one must always be evaluating and managing the risk. In the first photo, you can see camp 3 with the route to camp 4 (7,850 m / 25,755 ft) in the background. Some people leave for their summit push from camp 3. For many years, people climbed to the false summit of Manaslu, which was a small section below the real summit. The real summit was out of view from this point. There is just over two months to get ready, prepare, join the World Sherpas team and climb to the real summit of Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,782 ft). For more information on our Manaslu Expedition (Mountain of Spirit) this Sept, click on link below. If you would like to arrange a call to discuss training, preparation, gear or the climb itself, send us a message or email. See you in the mountains.

Climbing Island Peak (6,189 m / 20,305 ft in the Khumbu valley is an experience of a lifetime and very achievable for many strong trekkers and beginner climbers. There is a mix of ice and rock scrambling while you ascend towards the summit ridge on a 60-70 degree slope. Your physical and mental strength will be tested but the rewards while climbing this beautiful mountain are worth the effort. As you gain altitude, there are amazing views of Makalu (5th highest mountain in the world), Lhotse (4th highest mountain in the world), Nuptse, Ama Dablam and many other great Himalayan peaks. Before the climb in our base camp, we do a half day rope training, practice your Jumar (ascending device) and abseiling skills along with other mountaineering techniques to get your ready for the climb ahead on a fixed line. Safety is our number priority, enjoying the experience is number two and making the summit is the bonus. Join the World Sherpas team October / November 2024 and climb Island peak.
