🇲🇨Happy Independence Day🇲🇨

Today is the 79th anniversary of Indonesia's proclamation of independence. It is the day when Indonesians celebrate their freedom from colonialism in 1945. On this day, you will see that everywhere is filled with red and white decorations as a symbol of the country's flag. This day is always celebrated with a flag ceremony at the State Palace, in schools and in goverment agencies throughout Indonesia. Besides that, there are also traditional competitions such as makan kerupuk (cracker eating), balap karung (sack racing), panjat pinang (pinang tree climbing) and tarik tambang (tug of war), which contain the spirit values of hard work and teamwork to achieve the freedom.

💡Mepeed, A Unique Balinese Culture and Tradition💡

Bali is an island rich in tradition and culture with its spiritual values. One of the unique traditions that still exists today is Mepeed. This tradition has been practiced from generation to generation since 1711.
Mepeed comes from the word "peed" which means “to walk in a line as a procession”. Mepeed is a parade performed by Balinese women wearing traditional clothes named “kebaya” with a Balinese chignon. They carry gebogan, the offering made of fruits and traditional snacks arranged approximately 1 meter high, placed on the head to be offered to Sang Hyang Widhi as a symbol of gratitude. Mepeed is performed in a group of people and should not be done individually. This tradition usually starts in the afternoon and is divided into two waves, that is, tumpek kauh which is the residents who live in the west of the village and tumpek kanginan which is the residents who live in the east of the village.
It should be noted that not all villages carry out this tradition and the practice can be different in each village. Usually Mepeed is performed in Galungan, Kuningan or other major ceremonies. Since this tradition is only performed on certain days, you need to check the schedule if you want to experience this tradition during your visit in Bali.

💡Schools In Indonesia💡

In Indonesia, education is under the responsibility of Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Its levels include kindergarten, primary school, lower secondary school, upper secondary school and higher education. Since 2015, Indonesian education system has enforced 12 years of compulsory education which include 6 years of primary school, 3 years of lower secondary school and 3 years of upper secondary school.

1. Kindergarten
This level is intended for students aged 4-6 years old before entering primary school, devided into grade A for students aged 4-5 years old and grade B for students aged 5-6 years old. This level is not a requirement for entering primary school.

2. Primary School
This is a 6 years duration of education. Students must be at least 6 years old and 7 years old is prioritized.

3. Lower Secondary School
This level has a duration of 3 years study, for students who have completed primary school with a maximum age of 15 years old.

4. Upper Secondary School
This level also has a duration of 3 years study, for students who have completed lower secondary school with a maximum age of 21 years old. In Indonesia, there is two type in this level, general high school and vocational high school. Usually, students who will continue their study to higher education will go to general high school. In general high school, classes are divided into science class and social class and some schools also have language classe. Students will be in one of these classes according to their interest and choice. However, following the Merdeka Curriculum, in academic year 2024/2025 classes eliminated. So, 2nd and 3th year students can choose the subjects based on their interest, abilities, study plans and career aspirations. Meanwhile, vocational high school prepares students to enter the workforce. So, for students who choose to work after their graduation, they will usually go to vocational high school. If students in general high school studying general subjects, then in vocational high school students are more focused on studying vocational subject according to their choice such as culinary, fashion, tourism, office administration, accounting and many more.

5. Higher Education
Upper secondary school is an absolute requirement to enter higher education. Students will undergo entrance selection through various systems such as merit, grades or exams. In this level, students will studying a specific subject in their chosen major which will be their work field later.

The compulsory education requires students to wear uniform and attend school from Monday to Saturday and some schools only for 5 days. Moreover, at these three levels, students and teachers gather in the school ground to do the flag ceremony every Monday, singing the national anthem and raising the national flag.

Based on the government program, the compulsory education in public schools are free. However, the cost of books, uniforms etc are still in the responsibility of the student's guardian. How about the private schools? All costs are covered by the student's guardian.

💡The Meaning Of The Moon For Balinese💡

The moon has an important role for Balinese as the basis of Balinese calendar, Saka calendar that is used as the basis for determining Hindu’s important ceremonies. Saka calendar consists of 12 months and each month consists of 29-30 days.

In one moon phase, the most important day is in the new moon phase and in the full moon phase. In the new moon phase, the Balinese celebrate Tilem by praying to God Surya, the God of the sun for the blessing of His light that guides in the dark. Then, in the full moon phase, the Balinese celebrate Purnama by praying to God Chandra, the God of the moon, who is believed that when the moon is in the brightest phase, God Chandra gives His bless through the moonlight. In these two phases, the Balinese usually pray at their home or in the temple. Purnama and Tilem are done as a reminder to keep on the right path and to not lost in the dark.

In a year of Saka calendar, the most important holy day are Purnama Kadasa and Siwaratri. Purnama Kadasa is the core of all purnama that falls on the tenth full moon according to the Saka calendar. In this day, the Balinese pray in the temple because they believe that all God descend to earth to bless all His devotee.
Siwaratri that falls on the seventh new moon is the night of the smelting of sins. Siwaratri lasts for 12 hours, starting at 6 a.m with prayer until 6 p.m without speaking and full day fasting, then continued with mejagra or stay awake until 6 a.m the next day. Mejagra is done for self-introspection of sins and invoke the forgiveness.

In addition, the moon is also related to the Balinese folklore in the legend of Kala Rau that tells the occurrence of a lunar eclipse.

That's why the moon plays an important role for the Balinese, it is the basis of time measurement and is also related to folklore.

📍A Legend : How Bali Becomes An Island📍

Ages ago, Bali and Java were on the same land. At that time, there lived a high priest named Sidhi Mantra. His son, Manik Angkeran, was brilliant and devoted. But as he grew up, he began addicted to gamble. He did cockfight and obtained a lot of money. As time gone by, the rooster weakened and kept losing. Manik Angkeran lost his wealth and he stole his father’s wealth to continued gambling even though his father warned him to stop gambling. Manik Angkeran kept asking for more money to pay off his debt so that his friends wouldn’t kill him.

Sidhi Mantra meditated, he prayed to the God. In his meditation, he got a hint to go to Mount Agung where Naga Basuki dweled.

Arrived at the cave, Sidhi Matra rang his bell and Naga Basuki appeared. Then, he asked for help to Naga Basuki. Naga Basuki gave him a suck of jewel asked him to start a mew life.

After the debt was paid, because of his greed, Manik Angkeran contiued to gamble and they lost their possession once more. But this time, Sidhi Mantra didn’t want to help him anymore. Manik Angkeran freaked out and stole his father’s bell to sell it at the the market. There, he met his friend who told him that the bell was magic and used to summon Naga Basuki.

Hearing that, Manik Angkeran immediately went to Mount Agung, asked for help to Naga Basuki. Naga Basuki gave him some of his treasures and told him not to come anymore. Manik Angkeran became more and more greedy as he saw all of Naga Basuki’s treasures. He tried to kill Naga Basuki and took all the treasure. Naga Basuki breathed fire toward Manik Angkeran and made him burned.

Sidhi Mantra who had a hunch that Manik Angkeran stole his bell, immediately went to see Naga Basuki. In the cave, he saw his son’s charred co**se. He screamed and cried, begging to Naga Basuki to resurrect his son. With his power, Manik Angkeran was ressurected and Naga Basuki gave a condition that Manik Angkeran have to stay with him. Sidhi Mantra agreed, he left his son and went to another land where he drew a line with his walking cane. Water flowed off from the line and separated into two islands, Bali and Java.
