FUKUI
People who like taking the road less traveled will enjoy this next and final stop. On your fifth day, use your Takayama-Hokuriku Pass and travel to Fukui, one of the untouched prefectures by foreign travelers to Japan. ⛩

The fact that Fukui is virtually unknown to most foreigners is a shame because it's home to a myriad of interesting attractions like the world-renowned Fukui prefectural dinosaur museum, Tojinbo cliffs, and many hot spring baths. If you visit in spring, then be sure to take a stroll along the Asuwa River which is regarded as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. 🌸

After a day of sightseeing and getting to know Fukui, settle down and relax in a thermal bath at Awara Onsen, one of the most famous hot spring towns in Central Japan. I seriously can't think of a better way to end your 5-day journey through the Chubu region than with a healing hot spring bath. 🛀

And that brings us to the end of our trip. Thanks for joining us on this journey through the central Chubu region of Japan! 🇯🇵

KANAZAWA
Use your Takayama-Hokuriku pass and take the famed shinkansen to Kanazawa City. Bordered by the Sea of Japan, Kanazawa is a fascinating city famous for its fresh seafood, geisha and samurai districts, and one of the three most beautiful landscaped gardens in Japan. 🌿

Some of Kanazawa's top highlights include Kenroku-en Garden, Kazuemachi and Higashi geisha districts, Nagamachi samurai district, and Rojo Park. You can enjoy the freshest seafood lunch at Omicho Market and indulge in a soft serve ice cream cone enriched with gold leaf and cherry blossom sprinkles. Oishi! 🍦

TOYAMA
On your third day in the Chubu region, use your Takayama-Hokuriku Pass to visit Toyama City, the capital of Toyama prefecture. It's the city that marks the beginning of the Tateyama Kurobe alpine route, a famous route that takes you through the Northern Japan Alps.

When in Toyama, be sure to check out Toyama Port, Iwasehama Beach, and Shinminato Kittokito Fisherman's Wharf, a fresh seafood market that's home to one of Japan's famed live seafood auctions. It's where you'll find delicious seafood specialties like firefly squid, beni-zuwai crab, and shiroi ebi or "white shrimp". Referred to as the "Jewel of Toyama Bay", shiroi ebi is a regional type of shrimp prized for its mild sweetness and rich flavor.

If you visit Toyama in spring, then you'll definitely want to check out Tonami Tulip Park. The city holds an annual tulip fair which showcases over 3 million tulips planted throughout the city.

SHIRAKAWA-GO
Most people have definitely heard of Shirakawa-go, one of the most sought-after destinations in Japan. It's located right here in the central Chubu region and you can easily visit this beautiful village using the Takayama-Hokuriku Pass! 🚅

Located in Gifu prefecture, Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. These houses are known for their slanted thatched gable roofs. This region gets some of the heaviest snowfall in the world so the roofs are built at a steep angle to allow snow to easily fall off. ❄️

When covered in a thick duvet of snow, Shirakawa-go looks like a fairy tale. Winter is one of the most popular times to visit but as you can see from these images, it's absolutely gorgeous at any time of the year. When you go, be sure to try Hida Beef which is one of the most prized beef brands in Japan. 😋

NAGOYA, GIFU, & MINO
Konichiwa! It's been a while since we last posted here but I just wanted to talk about our favorite country in the world – Japan. For many of you, we know that it's your favorite country too! ✌️

We love going to Japan but like many people, we tend to revisit the most popular cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Sapporo. There are so many lesser known but equally interesting places to visit in this country, one of them being the Chubu region in Central Japan. It's comprised of 9 prefectures, some of which you've probably never heard of.

One of the easiest ways to explore the Chubu region is with the TAKAYAMA-HOKURIKU PASS. It gives you unlimited travel on certain JR Central trains and buses for 5 consecutive days.

To help you plan your future trip to Japan, we worked with Tourism Boards in the Central Japan Area to create a 5-day Chubu itinerary that takes you to several major destinations in Central Japan. For the next 5 days, we'll show you some of the best sights in the Chubu region, starting with Nagoya, Gifu City, and Mino.

Perhaps not as many people have heard about Nagoya but the capital city of Aichi prefecture is home to one of the best regional cuisines in Japan. It's also where you'll find interesting attractions like Nagoya Castle and its Hommaru Palace. Nagoya Castle is one of Japan’s first castle structures to be designated a National Treasure. Come visit and enjoy delicious Nagoya Meshi and the super adorable Piyorin pudding!
