Glacial Hills Scenic Byway The Glacial Hills Scenic Byway gets its name from the rolling hills and rock-strewn valleys carved by ancient glaciers. A beautiful drive any season!

The receding ice left behind a beautiful landscape and highly fertile farmland. On July 4, 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition celebrated the first Independence Day of their journey near what is now Atchison. Fifty years later, the Kansas-Nebraska Act opened the Kansas Territory and settlers were drawn to the area's rich soil and nearby rivers. The Glacial Hills region also includes one of the mo

st famous Pony Express routes as well as Fort Leavenworth, the oldest Army post in continuous existence west of the Missouri River. Abraham Lincoln delivered one of his most famous campaign speeches in the area in 1859, and years later people would watch Atchison resident Amelia Earhart grow up to be a renowned aviator.

The 40th Parallel Marker is also known as the Cast Iron Marker. It was cast in St. Louis, Missouri and erected on May 8, 1855.

To visit this, drive north of White Cloud, Kansas 2.5 miles to the Nebraska State Line where you will find a historic marker about the "Point of Beginning of the Public Land Surveys of the Sixth Principal Meridian" beside the road. About 80 yards north, there is a trail which leads up to the top of bluff where you will find this obelisk which is a monument to the starting point for surveying the 40th Parallel. There is a guest register and an information station. The trail up the bluff is pretty steep and the walk is probably risky when the ground is wet, but it was dry when I visited last week. There is a railing to hold on to and someone in average condition can do it.

87 years ago, June 15, 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan completed the first non-stop flight from the Red Sea to Karachi. The pair were in the midst of an around-the-world flight attempt in the Lockheed Electra 10-E pictured here.

Tall Oak Indian Monument stands in front of the Doniphan County Courthouse in Troy. Sculptor Peter Toth carved the monument from a Burr Oak log 67 inches in diameter as part of his series of related sculpture-tributes across the US and Canada honoring Indigenous cultures. Stop by Troy when you drive Glacial Hills Scenic Byway to see Tall Oak and the Romanesque-influenced courthouse. https://www.travelks.com/listing/peter-toth-indian-monument/5111/ https://www.travelks.com/places-to-visit/cities/troy/ https://www.travelks.com/things-to-do/byways-and-highways/byways/glacial-hills/

I just wrote the first article in my new Reedy Press book, Historic Kansas Roadsides. The book includes thumbnail sketches of 80 Kansas communities along or near Kansas Byways. The book begins with the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway and will end with the Land & Sky Scenic Byway. As you can tell, this is White Cloud, Kansas, home of this weekend's White Cloud Flea Market (106th show).

that our Lockheed Electra 10-E, Muriel, is named after Amelia Earhart's younger sister, Grace Muriel Earhart Morrissey?

The sisters shared many adventures throughout their childhood. Muriel taught for many years in Massachusetts, where she lived with her husband Albert Morrissey. After Amelia’s disappearance, Muriel helped manage Amelia’s affairs and wrote two books about her sister: “Courage is the Price” and “Amelia, My Courageous Sister.”

We are proud our museum carries on Muriel's legacy through our flagship artifact!

Happy Friday from Muriel, our Lockheed Electra 10-E!

Muriel is identical to the airplane Amelia Earhart went missing with on her around-the-world flight in 1937. One of only fourteen built, ours is the last remaining Lockheed Electra 10-E. Muriel will serve as the centerpiece of the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum! To learn more about this historic aircraft, visit our website at AmeliaEarhartHangarMuseum.org.
