This past weekend was the 25th Annual Ohama Summer Festival🎶 Held at Ohama Seaside Park in Amami, Kagoshima✨ dance groups and bands performed throughout the 2-day event. 🏝️Ohama Beach is known for its beautiful white sands, glistening ocean waves, breathtaking sunset views, and starlit night skies, so attendees were treated to a perfect backdrop for the festivities🌅

What better way to welcome the end of the rainy season than to enjoy the sunflowers!🌻🌻🌻

Amami Oshima’s sunflower fields are planted and cared for by the locals. You can spot one along Route 58 in Aminoko, Setouchi Town, and another near Kurasaki Beach in the Ash*toku community of Tatsugo Town☀️ The Ash*toku field (pictured) should be in full bloom soon🌻 so be sure to stop by!!

Hints of spring come to Amami in the middle of winter?! 😲 Being a southern island of Japan, Amami Oshima sees cherry blossoms much earlier than most of the rest of Japan🌸🌸🌸 Various cherry blossoms bloom, but the dark pink, bell-shaped flower is the most prominent on the island. These cherry blossoms are called ‘hikanzakura’ and bloom from late January through early February on Amami🎶

Ohama Seaside Park is the venue for various concerts and events on Amami Oshima. This past weekend, it was the location for the T-Rex Race in Amami event! 🦖🦖🦖 While wearing the movement-impeding t-rex costumes, adults and children alike participated in lively games and, of course, racing🏁

The Amami Ocean Museum at Ohama Seaside Park🌅 was recently renovated and reopened to the public back in March! It features exhibits on the ocean life of Amami, a workshop space, a s***m whale skeleton, a large aquarium, and various smaller aquariums–some of which have baby loggerhead and green sea turtles that were taken into protection last year🌊🐢

Tobirajima is a small island located in Sumiyo, Amami City✨ Legend has it that the goddess of the Ichi community and the goddess of Kikaijima had a contest of power to see who could move the island located in the sea between them🌊 The goddess of the Ichi community won, bringing the island to its current location 😲

Pictured is a chestnut tiger butterfly (Parantica sita) 🦋 It is similar to the Ceylon blue glassy tiger butterfly (Ideopsis similis) but has a slightly larger pattern and overall size.

Ceylon blue glassy tiger butterflies come to Amami for the winter, so be sure to keep an eye out in the following months! Meanwhile, the chestnut tiger butterflies will come in the early spring🎶

The porcelainflower, or ‘sakuraran’ in Japanese, is a vine that blooms in a distinct downward-facing shape. Sakuraran are known for their ‘sakura’ cherry blossom-like color🌸 and ‘ran’ orchid-like leaves🍃 hence the name sakuraran.

They usually bloom around late spring/early summer on Amami. Since they grow in high places, they can be challenging to find🔎 so if you come across one, consider yourself lucky!

In Sumiyo, Amami City there is a large banyan tree growing upon a rock!😲 Thus, it has the name ‘rock hugging banyan tree’🌳

Legend has it that a man from the Ishihara community and a man from the Yanma community had a strength💪 contest to pull out a boulder from the ocean separating the two. In the end, Yanmataro from Yanma won, bringing the large rock over to his side🪨 As time went on, a banyan tree took root upon the rock and grew to the size it is today✨

On November 8, 2022, a total lunar eclipse was visible from Japan! This celestial event🌟 coincided with the lunar occultation of Uranus, resulting in a phenomenon not seen for 442 years😲

While the cloudy skies on Amami covered the moon for a lot of the night☁️ people kept their eyes and cameras out for the brief moments they could glimpse the 'blood moon.' These pictures were taken from the Sakibaru Viewpoint✨

As the weather grows colder🍃 there are still ways to enjoy the waters of Amami Oshima🚣Canoeing and sea kayaking are popular summer activities that can extend past the main season, and there are even traditional funakogi boat races, like the one pictured, that take place in both the summer and fall🍂

Usually, six paddlers and one helmsman make up a team🛶 but there is also a version in which there is just one paddler and a helmsman racing against the clock in a timed course⏱️
