Land Conservancies Partnering to Protect North Carolina Lands Impacted by Helene
Ashe, Alleghany and Watauga, NC Counties: A partnership of non-profit organizations is working to provide options for landowners now considering conservation in the wake of hurricane Helene. While property owners with damaged homes may be eligible for federal buy-out programs, the scale of Helene’s impact is leading some landowners of undeveloped land to consider a conservation sale, especially for lands within a floodplain. The New River Conservancy and Blue Ridge Conservancy are actively developing resources to provide landowners with market-value alternatives to development if plans have changed.
Homeowners in Ashe and Watauga counties who sustained damage from Hurricane Helene are invited to apply for home buyouts, elevation, or stabilization grants through the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management (NCDEM). In-person application assistance will be provided at the Watauga Community Recreation Center, located at 231 Complex Drive in Boone.
In-Person Application Assistance Dates and Times:
Tuesday, January 14, 2025: 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Wednesday, January 15, 2025: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Homeowners interested in applying for federal funding to elevate, stabilize, or participate in the home buyout program are encouraged to attend. For those opting for the buyout program, affected properties will be transformed into conservation areas, contributing to flood risk reduction and the preservation of natural resources.
An informative 8-minute video about the program is available on the NCDEM website at www.NCDPS.gov/HM, providing further details and guidance on the application process.
