In light of the ongoing Riley Fire that have impacted operations of Denali National Park & Preserve, let’s talk about expectations for travel in Alaska during the summer. As of July 1, 2024, there are 333 fires being tracked across the state. With changing winds, there could be smoke or active fires wherever you go. We certainly want people to still visit our area, but we ask that you pack your patience and adaptability to changing conditions. Discover Denali is an excellent resource to help you explore that the area extends beyond just the national park! Click on the link in bio to discover all the different recreation opportunities, shops and restaurants in our gateway communities. https://www.discoverdenali.org
Thank you to all our first responders!

Fire Update 7/2 12:00pm

The report from this morning’s fire meeting is that the Riley Fire is now at 10% containment. Two additional hotshot crews are arriving today to assist.

GVEA has completed the known needed repairs to the line and is waiting for permission to re-energize based on firefighting operations. Fire fighting personnel safety and operational needs take priority. The hope is that when the line is re-energized there are no additional repairs needed, but of course, that isn’t guaranteed at this point.

Cell phone service in the canyon has been restored, although power is backup generator, and signal could be lost again.

Train service into Denali remains impacted. If you are in the area and scheduled to depart via train, please report to the Denali princess wilderness Lodge, buildings A and B, at your scheduled departure time for transportation by motorcoach.

Denali National Park and Preserve remains closed.

Local businesses in Healy, Carlo Creek, McKinley Village and Cantwell are operating as normal. Local excursions and tours are still operating as well, for the most part. If you need help turning your lemon into lemonade while in the area, please reach out to us for assistance.

Open to mile 13!

Open to mile 13!

The Denali Park Road is now open to Mountain Vista (Mile 13)!

Mountain Vista is a popular late winter destination for skiing, snowshoeing, mushing, and more. Trails in this area are not yet packed in, so snowshoes or skis are recommended for traveling anywhere off the road. Stop by the Winter Visitor Center to borrow a pair of snowshoes if you need. Consider checking out the short Mountain Vista Loop trail or exploring further along the park road past Mountain Vista on foot, where the road is closed to vehicles.

Park facilities are limited during the winter, but the Winter Visitor Center is open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm and the Sled Dog Kennels are open Saturdays and Sundays only from 1 to 4 pm. The Mountain Vista Rest Area has vault toilets and a picnic shelter. For more information about planning a winter trip, visit go.nps.gov/DenaliWinter.

Don't forget to check the weather before your visit! New snowfall may close the road back at Park Headquarters (Mile 3) at any time. Even when the road is open you should expect to encounter snow and ice while driving, particularly on shaded sections of the road. Call us at 907-683-9532 for the most up-to-date information on conditions.

Quite the cold snap we are in! Supposed to dip even lower next week. How's it looking where you are?

Our Winter Visitor Center and Indoor Picnic Area are CLOSED on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday November 23 🦃🥘🥧

Visiting Denali in the winter can look a little different from our summer operations, offering unique opportunities to beat the crowds and recreate in a quiet winter wonderland! It’s always a good idea to check our website for up-to-date scheduled activities and road conditions so you can “know before you go”. Please remember to recreate safely and utilize Leave No Trace Principles.

The Winter Visitor Center will reopen Friday, November 24th from 9:30am -5pm.

Winter is here!!!

Winter is here!!!

Winter has officially fallen upon Denali National Park and Preserve! We have received our first significant snowfall of the season. Here are some quick tips if you haven’t visited our park in winter conditions:

1. The park road is currently closed at mile 3. No motorized traffic is allowed past this point at this time.

2. If you plan to get out on the hiking trails remember to layer up and prepare for varying trail conditions by wearing appropriate footwear for snowy walks.

3. The George Parks Highway and the park road are very slippery with low visibility. Please drive with caution.

Happy Solstice!!

Happy Summer Solstice from Denali National Park & Preserve. Today in the Park, the sun rose at 3:48 am and will set at 12:28 am, giving us 20 hours and 40 minutes of light.

At this time of year, abundant wildflowers can be found throughout the park. Here, we see Arctic Lupine (Lupinus Arctitus) and Mountain Avens (Dryas Octopetala) along the Savage Alpine Trail overlooking the Tr'at'egheth No', also known as the Savage River Valley with the Alaska Range beyond.
