Discord in the workplace sucks. Here are things I wish I knew before navigating a team conflict:
1️⃣ Everyone responds differently to conflict. Some people get silent, some people blow up. Have a clear structure for the conversation. Take pauses when things get heated. Talk 1:1 with people who are quieter - or ask them a specific question to bring in their voice.
2️⃣ Talk to each team member ahead of time. Knowing each person’s perspective and needs ahead of time is so helpful. You can then reference what they’ve said, or ask them to state it in the group if it’s not too sensitive, in the conflict conversation.
3️⃣ Conflict doesn’t have to be heavy. I can reframe it as an opportunity, as a chance to re-calibrate to the truth of what we need and what’s happening on the team. I can joke and laugh together. My attitude towards the conflict is what defines its tone.
As your team learns to navigate conflict more effectively, it will become a seamless part of your work culture. Start building a better foundation today.

Navigating conflict is a LEARNED skill. Here are 3 things I wish I’d known sooner.
1️⃣ PLAN so you don’t lose your voice - we have a whole worksheet for this in our Art of Difficult Conversations Course
2️⃣ Get clear on your goal. Not what you want the other person to do. What you hope YOU will do, and what you hope happens between you. Ex: “I want us both to feel seen”. Third, map out how to get to that goal. Then map out how you’d know if you felt seen, or if they did. (For instance, you’d reflect back their words and what you think their true concerns are, and they say “Yes, that’s right!)
3️⃣ Know that one conversation is not the whole relationship. You can always come back and try again. Pretend that it’s a test. Grade yourself on what you think you did well and what you didn’t, and figure out how to study or practice to accomplish your goal even better next time.
Check out the link in our bio to receive your FREE conflict survival guide. Good luck out there.

A “role-self” is a version of you forged in response to your environment. It is a mask dawned for both survival and acceptance — a protective mechanism that your childhood self relied on to get their needs met.
This role-self, while it helped us through a chapter of our lives, can be detrimental to us as we grow older. It can become the very thing perpetuating cycles of hardship within our adult lives. Lindsay C. Gibson, author of Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, put it simply:
“You can’t forge a deep and satisfying relationship from the position of a role-self. You have to be able to express enough of your true self to give the other person something to relate to. Without that, the relationship is just playacting between two role-selves.”
True connection can’t happen without authenticity — authenticity can’t be accessed without awareness — awareness can’t flourish without acceptance.

More often than not we aren’t given the tools to handle tough conversations. Neither were our parents.
It’s time to unlearn patterns and break generational cycles. If you are looking for better ways for handling conflict - one that leans INTO connection - DM us to recieve a FREE copy of our Conflict Survival Guide.
We can do better.

There’s this funny thing we humans do sometimes — especially when resentment is in the mix — and that’s punishing the very behavior we’ve been begging to see.
What do I mean by that? Let’s say you’ve been consistently inviting your partner to join your social activities with friends. The one time they finally come, they’re greeted with a chorus of ‘Oh, look who finally decided to show up!’ — a mix of shame and judgment.
Now, if you and your partner have a playful, 🌶️ banter thing going on, this might be no big deal. But if not, it can be really discouraging and might actually work against the connection you’ve been trying to build. The last thing you want is for your partner to feel like their effort isn’t appreciated or that they’re stepping into a setup instead of a warm, welcoming space.
So let’s make it a point to celebrate the wins, no matter how small. When we acknowledge and appreciate those efforts, we create more of the behavior we want to see and strengthen the relationship in the process.

You can’t resolve conflict by sweeping it under a rug.
All relationships will have their disagreements, misunderstandings and shortcommings. The main thing to remember is that you are on the SAME TEAM and a lack of communication can ruin your ability to function as one.
The good news is, conflict doesn’t have to be terrifying. The more that you engage in it succesfully - the more trust and space can grow within a relationship.

If you are in an unsafe/abusive relationship - please seek support. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline.org) has resources available.

When we become triggered, we are not ourselves. We do not react rationally and are often incapable of complex relational emotions like empathy and compassion.
The things that occur in this state will elicit strong basic emotions, and, as a result, trigger the formation of strong memories that often overshadow the rest of a conversation or interaction.
The amygdala has basically hijacked our frontal cortex and we are in a state of alexithymia, an inability to identify emotions. We are basically just reactive meatsuits at this point. We need to reboot, before we can focus on returning to anything resembling a rational discourse.
This complex reactive chain is why emotional regulation, isolating your triggers, and recognizing others’ is so important.
Great, so how do we do that?
