On many trips guest's will ask me why I only use paper maps? no GPS, trail apps or navigation. The short answer is "I know where I am going"

-Waterproof
-Endless battery
-Always has connection

But a paper map isn't simply a reliable tool of navigation, it is a connection, conversating between you and the land. While unfolding it's crisp creased lines your opening more than paper, your opening a story, written in contours, symbols and ancient paths.

These maps won't mindlessly tell you where to go, it demands engagement. to pause and listen. You turn the map this and that way, aligning it with the ridges, rivers, peaks and trails around you. Like piecing together a puzzle that connects you to the land beneath your feet.

Most importantly there's the folding. A satisfying ritual of tucking it back together, creases soft from the day's use, feels like sealing up a memory. Each fold holds the story of where you've been, moments you've paused to orient yourself, and the quiet triumph of finding your way.

Unlike a GPS, Paper maps invite you to be a part of the landscape, to see it, feel it and understand it. It's a small, magical act of connection- to the land, adventure and yourself.

"Canoes on a foggy morning" is a great name for this picture.

I first noticed the wild chives

In early summer newly exposed soil is carpeted by fresh onion flavored nutrient packed chives, grasping to life on the tranquil shoreline of the Athabasca.

The Bears, Moose, deer, and birds spend weeks in June sweeping the shores clean of any chive in sight (a hot commodity)

I am no different - finding a small handful of this wild delicacy to garnish my eggs in the mornings.

"Eggs and Chives" may have to be the new name of this beautiful picture.
