10 years ago, we launched a bike travel guide for Vancouver. Our daughter, Annika, was 5 and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be returning to see our first Taylor Swift show on the final weekend of The Eras Tour.

Back in July 2023, I was really mad at Taylor. Annika was crying because I wouldn't spend $$$ for Seattle tickets. How was I the bad guy?

I promised her we would see the film when it came out, which ended up being at Nitehawk Cinemas in Brooklyn, right after I spoke at the Vision Zero conference. Walking into the theater with her, I was like "what's the big deal?" 1 minute into the film, I was crying...WTF IS WRONG WITH ME. It was the crowd reactions that got me.

Fast forward to April 2024, I told her if she raised $4000, we would go to the Vancouver show in December. She got her first job as a 14 year old at Fat Tire Farm in Hood River and did some babysitting and cat sitting and little by little, she did it!

We took Amtrak with our bikes to Vancouver and took it ALL in. There were tears, fights over beads, loud singing, lots of walking and biking and amazing food.

Thank you, Taylor Swift and Vancouver, for the mother-daughter memories to last a lifetime.

Special nod to Tanner at and the staff at and for some of the best GF meals ever.

Hats off ! Keep installing those protected bikewaya and create more people centric streets!

We are blessed to watch bike tourism history unfold in our backyard, the Columbia Gorge, for the past 8 years and for the next 5 years.

This was from Saturday's Mitchell Tunnel dedication by Oregon Department of Transportation, a critical link in reconnecting the Historic Columbia River Highway, 75 miles, between The Dalles to Troutdale, an exurb of Portland.

One step closer to realizing our dream of hosting bike tourists at Roll On Inn.

"If we want to make our cities safer - and healthier and happier - we need to stop focusing on making our streets wide enough to accommodate some extrapolated future traffic demand. Instead, let's figure out where our kids want to go - like schools and parks - and figure out where they are coming from. Then, let's make it safer for them to walk, bike, scooter, hop, roller skate or how else they want to get there."

It's not every day that a Safe Routes to School Manager gets to take a bike tour with an author and traffic engineer, checking out school infrastructure.

The Boulder middle schools were so impressive!

Thanks to John Simmerman of for inviting me and to Wes for writing a book that helps us build a more child centered America.

"Blame and the punishment that follows may satisfy the thirst for vengeance. But we cannot punish and learn at the same time. Punishment keeps in place the belief that the system is safe and the human error was the aberration. Learning requires recognizing the failures built into the system and changing the system. Punishment has nothing to do with prevention."

Thanks to and for bringing Jessie Singer to the Washington Bike Walk Roll Summit and allowing me to fangirl out.

I believe writers like Jessie are making change by holding our city leaders and automobile industry responsible for the death and injuries on our streets.

It's OUR job to make streets for children, by design. Youth education shouldn't be necessary for surviving our streets, but enabling them to thrive.

Armed with the genius of Tom Flood , I delivered a workshop at the Governor's Highway Safety Association meeting on engaging youth in design, with 3 demonstration projects.

It was awesome to meet the funders of our current demonstration in Odell, the National Road Safety Foundation, along with my grant manager, Olivia Greer of GHSA.

I did a lot of exploration of Indy along the Cultural Trail, taking in the local food, cider, vintage and vinyl. Another favorite discovery was the White River Trail or "limestone canyon" as I called it. Indianapolis has great people and I would come back for a visit in a heartbeat.

The morning after we arrived in Dubuque, Iowa, we met, David Hartig. He owns the shop, Bicycle World, and champions his vision for bicycles as mobility with Dubuque Forward, a group of private sector leaders that demand action.

Dave gave us the advocacy background of the city before Kyle and I took a ride to the farmer's market and while riding on the sidewalk, we came upon the murals of Central Avenue. I thought, they have 4 lanes for vehicles, "where is the protected bikeway!?"

Serendipidiously, when we came back to the hotel, this fresh newspaper was at the front desk. The article talked about the newly installed lanes, Dave's leadership and an opportunity to put a bikeway on Central Avenue.

The City of Dubuque Government has the space and culture. They need to harness the culture to reclaim the space for people who clearly want to ride a bike for transportation. If it were me, I would do a pilot of taking 1 of the vehicle travel lanes, bump out the parking and create a 2-way protected bikeway.

Also: sharrows are not infrastructure, they are wayfinding.

Look for our Dubuque Wander by Bike guide coming soon!
