Late Season Durian 1 of 8

As the rainy season begins to move into Thailand, the daily scattered showers signals the end of the hot season, which invariably signals the ending of durian season.

However, this does not signal the stuffing of durian into your face

When they get your order wrong, but it turns out to be a good thing.

Trying a new Ladna vendor, i learned that they had 2 different types of noodles, the usual large rice noodle & the very thin, almost hair thin rice noodle, which is rather unorthodox, so i ordered one of each because but when i got my food, they had just put both kinds of into the same bowl -_- however it turned out to be a good thing since the bowl was huge & the extra egg i ordered to be with the noodles made it very heavy indeed.

By the time i had worked my way thru the mass of and began tackling the pork & i started to get that heavy eyelid feeling that starts at the base of the back of your head & descends down thru ur stomach & into your feet, making them heavy as lead.

Time to waddle back to the office like an inebriated

Need some more bacon with your bacon?

These gems are stuffed insanely with fillings, whether with or or in our case today: bacon!! The bacon is baked within a small loaf of sweet bread, the ubiquitous bread of choice for not only Thailand, but for most of the countries as well.

I can barely pronounce the name of the bakery but they have over 20 different fillings including the usual pandan custard, red bean, taro, but then they can get as odd as chicken sausage wrapped in

A little bit of column A & a little bit of column B.

Not quite two-faced Harvey Dent but still as different from right to left.

(1) Left: "Tom Yum" soup broth does not necessarily refer to the Thai national soup but refers to any soup broth which has been spruced up. So if you dont know how to spruce up your noodle soups on your own with the extra flavoring options in the middle of the table (sugar, fish sauce, chili vinegar, dried chilis) then you can just order this option for them to do it for you.

(2) Right: "Naam Sai" literally means "clear water" and will get you the base soup broth. This is a good option if you want to try out or deconstruct the full flavor & expertise of the vendor, or you just cant handle the spice.

Looks like fiery death!

Pork noodles come in many soups. One can have the (1) clear broth which is more or less soup stock of the appropriate animal. In this case: pork broth.

Or one can have (2) naam tok which means "waterfall" which translates to a darker, sweeter broth, quite close to broth, but with less intensity.

Or one can have (3) tom yum which means that they mix a variety of ingredients to spruce up the soup including lemon juce & dried smoked chilis, of which you see pictured here. It looks dangerous but this one is quite tepid, therefore edible & wont burn on the way out.

Includes blanched skices of pork, slices of pork liver, and the ubiquitous

Whats better than stinky fruit?

How about over-ripe stinky fruit...Not!! We tried to grab the least ripe durians at the local vendor and this was it. Notice how the meat is gush against the top of the seed = no bueno. This would have been "best" about 3 days ago when the meat is still firm enough for fibers within the meat to not yet be visible. Also the meat will more or less slip off the seed cleanly instead of turning into mashed potatoes after you This ripe, the flavor & aroma are heavy with caramelized brown sugar & can be smelled from miles away.

After cleaning up, cleaning off & sanitizing before going back to the office, the lingering scent on our bodies & clothes were still strong enough to annoy everyone who cant stand durian.

Need a little help from your friends?

As inobservant as i am, it takes me a while to notice the little nuances of things pressed up against my face. Dunno how this stunning mural ever eluded me, but it beckons to something familiar & yet is abstract enough to be quite non sequitur. The bo***ge of wires around the ankles is most definitely Thai though, if youve ever seen electricity poles in Thailand. ***ge

Deep Fried Banana Grannie

This leaf photo bombed this intimate moment between myself & my bag of freshly deep fried bananas. These bananas are sliced lengthwise into three pieces, offering two "sides" and one "middle."

Some people prefer the sides as they have two different textures from the sliced face & the natural face, while others prefer the chewiness of the middle pieces. I prefer them all!!

One of my favorite ways to eat fruit in Thailand: dipped in batter & deep fried. My local Fried Banana Grannie always looks cool with her shades on, deep frying like it aint no thang. Got a bag full of cats?

Around the late afternoon at Wat Pho this wall can have up to 20 cats from this one family. All orange. Big & small. Grabbing the last rays of the baking sun before the cool evening winds begin to blow in along the river.

This late morning roost seems to be play time before the noob siesta.

Garlic is good for you right?

I realize i just ragged on this vendor for serving tasteless noodle soup, which is accurate, but one thing they did do right, which a lot of vendors skimp on, is this thick & generous helping of garlic oil all over the top of the dumplings. Usually the garlic is minced & pan fried before being introduced into an oily bath to infuse.

id dump spoonfulls of the garlic on top of all my dumplings

Dumplings?! says

Dumpling noodles can easily be found along any busy street during the evenings in Thailand. These stands can easily be identified by the piles & piles of "bamee" egg noodles & the red bbq pork hanging fron the vendors cart.

I decided to try this vendor because it was vended by an old couple & had groups of people & families with children at the tables, unlike the other vendors on the street who only had singles at their tables. Unfortunately for me, apparently small groups of customers & families = bland soup & tasteless noodles >

Daily Special: Thursday - Turnips?!

I dont think ive ever really been a big fan of turnip cakes, mostly because it is really not (1) turnip and it is realky not (2) cake. Perhaps too much is but "terrine" doesnt quite do it & once you start adding in additional ingredients like boiled peanuts it starts to go sideways very quickly.

Which is a long introduction way for me to say, that my verdict here is: good stuff!! These "turnip cakes" have a lot of flour in them so they turned out more like "turnip noodles," especially when you pan fry them lightly in oil, they turn out warm & fuzzy on the inside and chewy & crispy on the outside.

Do you like to burn your face off?

Thai Suki is quite an animal in of itself. A strange animal at that. The "woon sen" glass noodles are clear & crystaline, which soak up all the flavor & moisture around it without becoming soggy. The greens & are standard additions, but its the red chili sauce that separates the good sukis from the great ones.

The suki sauce is quite musky by noodle soup standards, with deep, earthy undertones, and will usually from the chilis.

You can get suki with or without the soup, which can change the flavor quite drastically.

Only the image of someone elses hand grabbing a piece can jolt you out of your trance just long enuff to grab ur own and

Confusing morning. Theres hanging in the window for noodles but they wont serve it over rice. Instead they have over rice...same difference i guess.

The pork was of minor importance as it had about just as much flavor as the rice, despite the trimmings of fat on each slice, but the sauce was It was slightly sweet, slightly sour with a smoky, charred, peppery tang. Id bottle it up & sell it. The pork = keep it in the kitchen.

Nothing like having before a meal. Decided to try this new brand i havent seen before. As a quick reminder: la chong are tapioca noodles, aromatic & green from the pandan & creamy from the coconut milk. Usually served over (rather under) crushed ice, here we have the frozen popsicle version.

Just as they also (apparently) also love to chew their popsicles. I have a special place in my belly for paletas, especially sandia paletas (watermelon), so having the creamy thai version is not far from those same taste buds.

The frozen tapioca noodles can be quite a chore to gnaw on as they thaw far less quickly than the coconut milk around them, which accelerates the danger of the entire thing disintegrating off the stick, which is an inevitable calamity ticking to happen.

My classic breakfast when growing up always involved 2-3 soft boiled eggs & a small bottle of (or in our case today ) sauce. The chinese donuts are just icing on the cake.

Its important not to overcook the just until the whites turn...well white, but they are still sufficiently viscous enough to be a few dashes of ground white pepper & a few dallop of Maggie to add a dash of savoriness & color. If ur not too adept at applying the Maggie, shake it into your tea spoon so you can measure appropriately...2 dashes are more than sufficient (-_^ )

Green Tea Soy Milk 03 of 03

I dont even know all the cereals they toss into these mixes, but the little clear seeds with the black centers (in the soy milk) are my favorite. They look like little balls of tapioca but they pop like little caviar. You can see the tapioca ball (upper left) is quite opaque up against the red beans. The clear cubes of gelatin are quite are of medium density, half soft & half chewy; you hardly even notice them however, underneath the mess of oats & other floaties.

As i watched the vendor making this, i was surprised how little green tea he added to the usual concoction, but it surprised me even more how much it changed the flavor of the soymilk the soy milk adds so much extra creaminess & frothiness to the green tea, and the green tea elevates the flavor profile of the soy milk from pencil sketch to strokes from the master. The addition of the green tea almost dwarfs the impact of the chewables within.

This looks more like breastfast, but we're one of those "weird" people who likes & all day, everyday.

Deep fried pork buns have become a staple of my daily diet (sans bbq pork of course). The flour is sweet without the grainy sugery texture, and crispy & crunchy, notvto mention heavily soaked in oil

Today i opted for a squid pad thai to add a little gooey & chewy texture to my gooey & chewy noodles. This vendor (4 girls) is especially skilled at the frying process of the noodles, which infuses them with the full flavor of the oils on the pans as well as the sticky caramelization of the tamarind.

Today we have a special addition to the veggie garnish: banana blossom. The thick, white layers in between the rows of buds are dry to the tongue, giving a cold contrast to the moistness of the noodles.

(2) The procedure is simple: flip & begin to

(3) I performed some minor surgery to expose the composition of the & the cap of coconut milk hiding the treasures within.

(4) Usually the "play" is to stack the empty dishes like so in huge piles on your table after youve ravaged the contents therein, but i only had two scant stacks today as i had a very hearty & heavy in between dishes 1-2 & dishes 3-4. I realize i just disappointed the gawds...
