Who knew? About a 15-20 min drive.
Are you aware of Potter County's famous Moon Tree? This sycamore was grown from a seed that traveled to the Moon aboard Apollo 14 on January 31, 1971. The sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) planted at Coudersport Area Recreational Park in the late 70's has grown to a height of over forty feet.
There’s a plaque commemorating the tree, which is one of many “moon trees” that were planted across the country after the seeds were carried on Apollo 14. If you are heading to Potter County to explore Dark Skies at Cherry Springs State Park this year, you might want to explore the region and discover this curious site that is featured on the popular Atlas Obscura website. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/potter-county-moon-tree
