We were so hoping not to have to write this.

At some point over the weekend of May 19th, Madame Pele took back her land. Our charming little farmhouse and almost the entirety of its 5 windswept acres are gone. The river of lava in the picture we posted Saturday morning turned into a torrent, and another large flow came from the north, right through the area we called ‘the orchard’, and met up with the first flow.

We are enormously grateful for an amazing, adventurous decade in the wilds of Lower Puna. We are delighted to have been able to share the property with our friends and our many guests over the years.

We are devastated by the loss, but we will move ahead with love, gratitude, and aloha. A hui hou.

The most recent picture we have of the house relative to the lava flow from fissure 20. This was taken approximately 8:30am on Saturday May 19th. The lava has entered the property in two locations; one of those is a smaller lobe pushing lava along the lowest edge of the property.

Janet Babb, HVO spokeswoman, said the fissure is located near three others in the lower part of the subdivisions. She said only the fourth vent was active as of 11 a.m.
