Hello autumn! The leaves on many trees are starting to change colour and slowly drop off. It’s always this grass that goes red first, it’s such a lovely shade of red especially when the sun is shining on them - we are blessed with beautiful weather this week 🙌🥰🌳☀️

Things to do in the Mosel/Hunsrück region - go and visit some castles! Here is Burg Eltz, about an hour’s drive away, actually crossing over into our neighbouring Eifel region (another national park). Definitely worth the drive though, and we will definitely be coming back when it’s open and bring our bikes as lots of cycling routes in the extensive grounds 🙏😊

The Panoramahaus is surrounded by beautiful, farming fields - there’s something different growing in them depending on the time of year, from Corn to Maize, R**e Seed to Wild Flowers. On a balmy, summer’s day when it’s too hot to move, we love sitting watching the farmers working in the fields. We love going for walks, and of course bike rides too! And of course the forest is also on our doorstep 🥰

We made a short video about what’s involved in managing our wood supply to keep our wood burners going to provide heat during the long, cold winters here in Germany!

It starts with buying some wood in the local forestry commission’s annual wood auctions. Then it’s split on site, and transported to our gardens by trailers ready to be unloaded and stored for a year, or two. Then, we have to cut it further so the logs fit into our wood burners, and transport it to our wood sheds by the house, ready to be used - phew! A lot of work, but good fun, and worth it when it’s snowing outside and the wood burner is keeping us nice and toasty. Enjoy!

Garden time at the Panoramahaus, even in the rain! The oak trees have only just dropped their leaves, which is very late, so perfect time to scoop them up and use them for mulch, and to create area for our pollinators to hibernate over winter. Tomorrow, going on a hunt for some materials to make some Christmas wreaths. In the meantime, drying off in front of the wood burner with some mulled wine 😊

Building up our wood supplies getting ready for winter - still pretty mild here in Germany although the temperature is starting to drop and this week we will see below 0 degrees, with the possibility of our first snow of the season! ⛄️

It’s amazing how quickly the days go here at the Panoramahaus - only seems like we arrived yesterday, but tomorrow it’s time to pack up and go home.

We’ve been busy being visited by all the way from the giving us lots of amazing tips for what to plant and where, thank you 🙏

We also did some weeding (will it ever end?!) and used up the mulch we made earlier this yr when we spent hours shredding some garden waste - big job (both the shredding and the mulching) but the aim is to keep the weeds at bay, and keep the mositure in the ground - we have some more bark mulch coming later in the yr too to go on top, which I’m sure will help if (!) we get another long hot summer next yr.

Now is the perfect time to get the gardens in shape for next year, just need more time! 😊

And before the fireworks, we spent the day doing tourist things in Bernkastel, this included visiting the Burgruine Landshut, the Bernkastel-Kues wine festival, and then taking a Mosel cruise! Was such a lovely day - and all just 15 mins away from the Panoramahaus 😊

Every year there’s a wine festival in Bernkastel-Kues, our nearest Mosel town (15kms from the Panoramahaus). Today we were lucky enough to be here to celebrate the end of the wine festival with the annual fireworks. Weren’t they amazing?!

And the gardens! It’s July, it hasn’t rained in 3 weeks during which time it has hovered between mid 20s to low 30s. We watered the gardens like crazy all last week, and once the heat of the next few days breaks, we’re hoping for some rain 🌧 🙏😊

Back at the Panoramahaus for a week’s gardening. Was intending just to gently potter, but i never knew weeds and grass could grow so much since we were last here (only 4 weeks ago!) omg! So actually a busy week ahead but as you can see, always ending the day on the balcony, in the sun, with food and wine 😊😎🌞🍷The rapeseed is looking spectacular and smells amazing!
