PRISONERS HELD ABOARD THE “PRINCESS” AT COVE (Cobh), CO. CORK, WHO WERE COMMITTED TO SERVE IN THE KING’S FORCES ABROAD - 5th May 1799.
In the harbour of Cobh, Co. Cork, there were several prison tenders crammed with prisoners from across Ireland; most of whom had been rebel insurgents during the 1798 Rebellion. They were held in these prison tenders due to the overwhelming numbers in prisons across Ireland. This file states that most prisoners are ‘Fit for Service,’ which indicates that they were being distributed to the British military or Royal Navy.
