Hot steam vents and cold trout waters. Fly fishing in Yellowstone Park is always a special treat...so much more than simply “catching”.

The heart of summer is prime time to get into the alpine back country. Our pack trip options allow guests to explore remote wilderness areas and lightly fished alpine streams filled with native trout.

Just give us a mountain river and some pocketwater. Waters continue to drop and we are entering our post runoff time of the season. Rivers are gaining more definition and trout will be adjusting their lies as water temperatures increase. This is a dynamic time of year as flows, hatch cycles and water temps are changing by the day and even by the hour. photo:

Flows are on the drop on all of our local rivers and things are getting really interesting. Salmon flies are now on the upper Madison and big fish are hunting big morsels of food!

For some reason the upstream mend was posing a bit of a challenge...

Some fishin’ weather just rolled into Southwest Montana. A low cloud ceiling should get those big browns feeding. Make sure you have a few big streamers in the box before you head out.

Gear boater extraordinaire Brian Citro hauls part of camp down the river on the Smith River. On our Smith River expeditions camp moves each night. It takes three large rafts and a dedicated team to break camp down every morning, row it down the river and set it up all over again before our anglers roll into camp just in time for some cold beverages and hot appetizers.

Hookup on the Smith. It looks like the peak of runoff is now behind us on the Smith. More good reports coming from our current trip on the river via satellite messenger.

It has arrived! The voices of happy anglers can heard singing from the hills in celebration of the arrival of the Mother’s Day caddis. Caddis are now on both the Yellowstone and the Lower Madison. The Yellowstone is rising and off color but the Lower is in good shape. Get out there and enjoy the blizzard!

Contemplating options on the Smith River. A healthy snowpack this season should provide a nice long floating window in 2018!

Pre-runoff season here in Montana. Time to get out there as spring fishing improves by the day. Skwala stoneflies are already feeling the itch and Blue-winged olives, March browns and Mother’s Day caddis will all be making appearances in the coming weeks.

Just a few weeks away from some explosive spring hatches. Things are about to get interesting!
