There’s something special about indulging in a craving and turning it into an adventure, especially when you’re sharing it with the one you love. Recently, I found myself with a deep craving for a classic Chicago-style hot dog. You know, the kind loaded with mustard, relish, onions, pickles, tomatoes, sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt—all cradled in that poppy seed bun. It’s a culinary masterpiece unique to the Windy City. So, I decided it was time to introduce my Brazilian princess, , to this Midwest delicacy at Portillo’s & Barnelli’s on Ontario Street in Chicago.
Now, if you know anything about Brazilian hot dogs, they’re a whole production. Down there, they pile on mashed potatoes, corn, peas, potato sticks, cheese, and sometimes even quail eggs. Let’s just say there’s no such thing as “too much” when it comes to toppings in Brazil. So, I was curious to see how a Chicago-style dog—simple yet precise in its composition—would stack up in her book.
To my surprise, Kenier wasn’t convinced that Chicago dogs were any less “complicated” than their Brazilian counterparts. But she loved every bite. The tangy relish, the snap of the sport peppers, and that perfectly steamed bun won her over, just as they always do for me. Watching her enjoy something so rooted in Chicago’s food culture made the experience even better.
Still, as much as I loved sharing that Chicago dog with her, my heart will always have a special place for Detroit’s Coney dogs. There’s something about the simplicity of a warm bun, a savory hot dog, and that chili sauce topped with onions and mustard—it’s a taste of home that no other hot dog can replace.
But this wasn’t about comparisons. It was about sharing a moment, exploring a city’s flavors, and enjoying each other’s company. We laughed, we debated over hot dog superiority, and we left with full bellies and even fuller hearts. Food has a way of doing that, doesn’t it?
Here’s to more adventures, more flavors, and more memories with the one who makes everything a little more special.
