I sure learned this a few years back when I walked the 1000km Bibbulmun track in 19 days. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you keep going past the boundaries you used to set for yourself!

We did another two peaks today. Mt Liberty 4459ft and Mt Flume 4328ft. We were blessed with a fantasic day. When we got to the top there was no wind at all, very unusual for this area especially in winter. We stayed on top enjoying the view for sometime. The clouds were billowing around us - sometimes too thick to see anything - sometimes able to see the valley floor far below. It was really special, it was one of my favorite hikes that I have done.

Mt Moosilauke - affectionately known as the Moose -is the tenth highest of the 4000 footers. The Appalacian trail goes over the top. The summit is well above the tree line so it provides 360 degree panoramic views.

There are 48 peaks over 4000ft in the state of New Hampshire. Uncle Bob has done all of them so far and is now doing "the grid". That means you have to do all 48 peaks in each month of the year. In other words, 576 mountains. Some of them are very dangerous to hike in the middle of winter so you have to pick your days well. His goal is to hike the grid over the age of 60 which he is doing now, and again after the age of 70! He is one very fit man let me tell you! This was the first hike we did together. Mt Lincoln 5089ft and Mt Lafayette 5249ft, both in the presidential range. We did both of them in a days hike. You lose the tree line around 4000ft. Spectacular scenery!

Another goat hike. The hike started out along the shore of a lake that is normally frozen solid by this time of yr. Notice the beaver dam. Then it goes up to the top of Mt Major. Again, there are spectacular views across Lake Winnepesauke to the Castle in the Clouds on the other side but the top of the mountain was covered in cloud for us. I really enjoyed the cloudy effect, it makes the colors so vivid and gives a soft light that you don't get on a sunny day.

These were taken on another goat hike. The trail was only a mile each way on this hike, and it runs up a 4wd road. There is a communications tower on top. Even though it is only a small mountain there are wonderful views to be seen from here. The day we did it it was very cloudy. However the clouds did clear from time to time to let the views peek through and the clouds gave the hike an ethereal feel.

My uncle Bob is a member of a hiking group who call themselves the goats. I went with them on some of their scheduled hikes and had a wonderful time meeting new people and taking photos. These were taken near Deerfield. The trail winds through a particularly nice boulder field.
