...IAN CONTINUING TO BATTER THE FLORIDA PENINSULA WITH CATASTROPHIC STORM SURGE, WINDS, AND FLOODING...

At 800 PM EDT (0000 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Ian was located about 95 miles south-southwest of Orlando, Florida. Ian is moving toward the north-northeast near 8 mph (13 km/h). On the forecast track, the center of Ian is expected to move across central Florida tonight and Thursday morning and emerge over the western Atlantic by late Thursday. Ian is forecast to turn northward on Friday and approach the northeastern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina coasts.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Ian is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Further weakening is expected for the next day or so, but Ian could be near hurricane strength when it moves over the Florida East coast tomorrow, and when it approaches the northeastern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina coasts on Friday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 50 miles (85 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). A University of Florida Coastal Monitoring Program wind tower near Punta Gorda recently reported sustained winds of 54 mph (87 km/h) with a gust to 91 mph (146 km/h). A private weather station in Joshua recently measured a wind gust to 89 mph (143 km/h).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 960 mb (28.35 inches).

Visit the National Hurricane Center website at hurricanes.gov for additional forecast information on Ian.

The next complete advisory will be at 11:00 PM EDT.

Project Lifesaver Saves Lives:
Many of you may have seen a search and rescue effort that took place outside of Maxton earlier this week involving an 80 year old resident.

This was a massive search effort involving multiple volunteers and law enforcement personnel from across the county and state as well as the use of two helicopters provided by the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office and the highway patrol. Thankfully the woman was found safe in a wooded area as midnight approached Monday.

In saying this, I wanted to reintroduce the “Project Lifesaver” program. First introduced in Robeson County by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office in 2020, “Project Lifesaver” is the premier search and rescue program operated internationally by public safety agencies, and is strategically designed for “at risk” individuals who are prone to the life threatening behavior of wandering. The primary mission of Project Lifesaver is to provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children with the propensity to wander due to a cognitive condition.

Had this resident been wearing a bracelet provided for free by our agency, trained agency personnel with docked equipment within their assigned vehicles could have located her within minutes. If you have a family member or friend or know of someone that could potentially utilize this lifesaving program, please contact our agency Chaplain Jimmy Hunt at 910-608-2193.
