HAPPY WORLD RHINO DAY!

Today, we are celebrating the two rhinos Thuza and Kusasa who have been in Ngamo Sanctuary for over 2 years as well as Mlevu and Asenze, two NEW rhinos that have been here for just over two weeks!

Mlevu and Asenze
Over the last 2 weeks, Mlevu and Asenze have been in their habituation paddock, eating natural vegetation, topped up with grassy lucerne and other supplementary feed. They've been monitored 24/7 by our Cobras Community Wildlife Protection scouts and are eating and sleeping well. They've established their middens, or communal dung heaps, and have been wallowing, enjoying mud baths. These are all good signs that they are settling in well. This World Rhino Day, we celebrate their safe arrival to their new home and all of the experts and people who made that possible!

Thuza and Kusasa
Over the last 2 years, Thuza and Kusasa have had over 2000 international guests, as well as over 1,500 local community members and school children visit them. These visits have supported the local Ngamo Clinic, benefitting thousands of people. Thuza and Kusasa, as CRCI's first champions, are leading the way for an ambitious conservation and community development project. This World Rhino Day, we celebrate Thuza and Kusasa and all the benefits they've generated since arriving at Ngamo, as well as the people who work so hard to protect them!

A study yesterday revealed wild elephants may address each other by name, becoming one of only a handful of animals known to use unique sounds to address one another.

The study examined 469 low-rumble sounds recorded from female African savanna elephants and their offspring from 1988 to 2022. A machine-learning model (see overview) analyzing the sounds was able to identify the elephant being addressed 27.5% of the time, a much higher rate than when the model was fed random audio. Researchers playing the audio clips in the wild elicited responses from the elephants in question, including movement toward the speaker as well as ear flapping and trunk movements.

It’s not clear which parts of the audio are the "names" or how naming conventions might work. Bottlenose dolphins and orange-fronted parakeets mimic each other's signature noises (w/video) to get each other’s attention, while humans use naming conventions and dogs respond when called.

I have been very fortunate to have experienced Africa and enjoyed many remarkable experiences. One of those was tracking Black Rhino in Matusadona NP, Zimbabwe. That was in 2002 when Rhino could still be found in the wild. With my mates Chris and Steve, we tracked a pair for several kilometers before the large female emerged into a clearing and I could get some photos. The click of my camera unnerved her, and she became agitated. Steve pulled me back, and the three of us hid behind a termite mound. After several minutes, which seemed so long, she trotted into the bush. Looking back on that day, I realize what a gift I received. Who today could track a wild Black Rhino? They have been poached into extinction in most of their former territory. You now can only see them in protected compounds guarded by rangers. Our loss.
