Joseph Conrad, a world-famous Polish-British novelist, was born in Zhytomyr region in 1857. His family's country estate in Terekhove Village now serves as school, and nearby you can visit a museum dedicated to life and work of the literary genius, as well as history of the whole area.
Horodske Village, a cradle of the lost Trypillya-Cucuteni civilization, one of the oldest, yet forgotten by the world (5,700-3,200 B.C.). And they are proud of it, having opened TWO museums. Poliska Khata Culture and Art Centre is a place highly recommended for visiting if you ever get close to Zhytomyr. It has become the forefront of Ukrainian traditions in the region. Come and join in the celebration of winter holidays!
Teteriv River. The biggest one in Zhytomyr region. It grinded its way through granite rocks milions of years ago. Excellent for fishing, kayaking, SUP-boarding.
Berdychiv town is a well worth visiting destination if you decide to spend a couple of days in Zhytomyr region. Being located only half an hour away, it offers a rare opportunity to fall back in time as you walk past old houses and find curious courtyards.
Radomysl Castle is a must visit destination in Zhytomyr region. Having been built in the early 17th century as a paper manufacture of Kyiv Pechersk Monastery, it merely escaped complete destruction and sprung up in its grandeur again only in 2007 thanks to the efforts of Olha Bohomolets, a noted Ukrainian physiacian and philanthropist. You can spend a day or two there (lodging is offered), losing yourself in the austere beauty of the castle and captivating nature scenes surrounding it. You will have a chance to see a unique collection of Ukrainian home icons, take a master class, eat in a medieval tavern and explore the small town of Radomyshl, the main cathedral of which was a "lab" for the famous artists (M. Vrubel, V. Vasnetsov and other) who decorated St. Volodymyr's Cathedral in Kyiv.
Derun festival has been held in Korosten annually since 2008. This year it happened to be on 9 September offering a novelty: burger-and sushi-style potato pancakes for true food enthusiasts :)
The first theatrical performances in Zhytomyr were held in 1797, and much later (1858) the city received a beautiful theatre, which serves as philharmonic nowadays. The public came to see performances of famous actors, among whom there was once a horse :)
The famous writer Mikhail Bulgakov found his love in Zhytomyr, where he also settled Lariosik, one of the heroes of The White Guard.

The oldest park in Zhytomyr was designed in 1903 by Europe's noted collector and philanthropist Baron Ivan Schoduar. It's one of the city's TOP attractions. What you will see: a pedestrian bridge across the Teteriv River, a "rakushka" - summer concert stage resembling a huge shell, wooden and floral sculptures, an airplane, etc. What you will not see: crowds of people.
