The USGS has declared that the eruption is over.
I am curious what they used to determine that nowadays … this was the first six months and 12 phases of Mauna Ulu…. After this chart, it never had high fountains again, but continued to build the shield that we see today for the next four years….
I’m not saying that the eruption is not over but historically and statistically speaking, I wonder what makes them determine that?
Either way we should be in for some exciting times on the Middle East rift zone of Kilauea of Volcano in the coming months and years…🌋

One of the things I’ve never understood is why the park or the county never reach out to the people who have spent thousands of hours in the field, getting people to and from the lava, assessing the safety of the lava in the field, and having their reputations and the lives of their clients depend on their expertise. This was in the midst of one of the 16 mile round trips at the end of the 61G flow…. I’d like to see anyone that works for the people who get to determine if it’s safe pull this off… I understand that’s not what they do, but if that’s the case then why do they get to determine if it’s safe for others or not?

The last lava tour ever in the field was May 1, 2018.
At that time, it was in the neighborhood of 8 miles each direction to go from the emergency access road on the coastal Flats across the lava Flats up the Pali and another couple miles or so up the hill to find the lava… we were averaging 14 to 16 mile round-trip days starting at 4 AM getting back to the cars at 10 AM and giving our guests about an hour at the lava.
Flash forward to today a new vent has opened It is much further inside the park on the rift and from where I took this picture tonight it would be 4 miles one way to the eruption.
Other than navigating the dangers of staying out of the gas(which is normally quite easy) and staying away from heavy flows covering forest This may be the easiest hike with the least danger that we have ever had while giving tours….
I hope the park does the right thing and open it up so that the world once again can have one of the most incredible natural experiences on earth… and when this happens, we will once again proudly lead the way🌋

The Eruption of Kilauea is on in the Napau crater on the Middle East rift of the Volcano.
The Park has reopened The Chain of Craters road and if the eruption continues I would imagine it’s only a matter of time until we can offer lava tours again…
The safest, most professional lava tours in the world.
Please do the right thing Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and when safe, provide the public with all of the proper information about the hazards so they can make good choices about going to the eruption.
As with all eruptions in Hawaii, this could be short-lived or it could last decades only time will tell.
I have faith they will eventually do what is right live up to the mission statement of the park and allow people access to the lava again…🌋
