ATM Fees, payment processing terminals & local currency tip! Sharing this info I’ve learned and put into practice living in Europe while still having U.S.-based cards/banks...

ATM Tips

Whenever you're asked during an ATM transaction if you'd like to withdraw cash with or without conversion to your home currency (i.e. withdrawing Euro and it asks if you'd like to convert it to U.S. Dollar)... ALWAYS select WITHOUT conversion. If you were to opt into the conversion, you are paying a marked up percentage on the conversion rate, meaning you're getting less money.

• ALWAYS try and find an ATM owned/operated by a bank! Those are the most trustworthy and typically the least gimmicky. If the bank has a door with a card slot, that's just to protect entry. You can use your card and insert it to unlock the door. It's legit.

• Don't fall for "Free Cash Withdrawal" ATMs! Those ATMs with "no fees" charge a very high conversion fee and are very deceptive. It may be "free" at the moment, but you'll pay for it by getting MUCH less for your money.

• AVOID! AVOID! DEFINITELY avoid these specific ATM brands: Travelex, Euronet, Your Cash, Cardpoint, and Cashzone.

Payment Terminal Tips

ALSO on any payment terminal (i.e. in a store or in a restaurant or even at a market booth) if/when you're asked to pay in the country's currency or pay in your home currency (i.e. Euro vs US Dollar), ALWAYS select the country's currency (i.e. Euro). If you select your home currency, you're paying a conversion fee mark up %. Same concept as the ATMs! Also, if you did select your home currency, it's still marked as a foreign transaction, so if your card has foreign transaction fees, that would still be charged! Basically converting to your home currency is a lose-lose! (PS having a credit card that has 0% foreign transaction fees is a wise investment if you plan to travel at least one or two times a year!!)
