On this Day 82 years ago, a fire Ravaged the intended Troopship USS Lafayette, known as the ex "SS Normandie", in the winter season, during the time of World war 2, at New York Harbour, USA, At 14:30 hours, on Monday February 9 of 1942, while docked at Pier 88, a carefree worker named Clement Derrick who was welding with a flame fed with acetylene gas, accidentally reached a pile of life jackets filled with flammable material, causing a fire. fire that spread throughout the ship, The ship's modern firefighting system had been disconnected during the conversion works, as had the internal pumping system. When the firefighters arrived at the ship, just 15 minutes after the fire broke out, they discovered that the ship's water intakes did not fit their hoses, so they had to limit themselves to throwing water on the ship from the dock and from firefighting boats, while the fire, fanned by a strong northwest wind, spread across the various decks. Shortly after, Vladimir Yurkevich, who had settled in New York in 1937 to open his own boat design agency, arrived at the dock. Yurkevich warned the naval officers of the danger that the large amount of water that the firefighters were throwing into the ship would cause it to list and capsize; Therefore, he suggested that they open the lower valves to flood the lower levels, causing the ship to partially sink and rest on the bottom. Then, once the fire was extinguished, it was enough to pump out the water inside. But Rear Admiral Adolphus Andrews, head of the 3rd Naval District, rejected the idea and had the police remove the engineer.
The fire was considered under control at six in the afternoon, but, as Yurkevich had said, the enormous amount of water inside the Lafayette caused it to begin to list to port. Despite attempts to correct the inclination, nothing could be done; Around midnight, Rear Admiral Andrews ordered the ship to be evacuated and at 2:45 AM on the 10th it capsized permanently, tilting at an 80º angle on its port side and nearly crushing a fire service boat. . The fire had caused one fatality (Frank Trentacosta, 36, an employee at the Robins Dry Dock) and 285 injuries, including firefighters, civilians and members of the Navy, a sadly incident that ended definitely the career of what was known one of the most precious Transatlantics, in Maritime History.

On this day 88 years ago, on 29 May 1935, SS Normandie had maiden voyage. Normandie's maiden voyage was on 29 May 1935. Fifty thousand saw her off at Le Havre on what was hoped would be a record-breaking crossing. Normandie reached New York after four days, three hours and two minutes, taking away the Blue Riband from the Italian liner, Rex. This brought great pride for the French, who had not won the distinction before. Under the command of master Captain René Pugnet, her average on the maiden voyage was around 30 knots (56 km/h) and on the eastbound crossing to France, she averaged over 30 knots (56 km/h), breaking records in both directions.
During the maiden voyage, French Line refused to predict that their ship would win the Blue Riband. However, by the time the ship reached New York, medallions of the Blue Riband victory, made in France, were delivered to passengers and the ship flew a 30-foot-long (9.1 m) blue pennant. An estimated 100,000 spectators lined New York Harbor for Normandie's arrival. All passengers were presented with a medal celebrating the occasion on behalf of CGT.

SS Normandie

The SS Normandie was a French ocean liner built in Saint-Nazaire, France, for the French Line Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT). She entered service in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat, crossing the Atlantic in a record 4.14 days, and remains the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever built.

Her novel design and lavish interiors led many to consider her the greatest of ocean liners. Despite this, she was not a commercial success and relied partly on government subsidy to operate. During service as the flagship of the CGT, she made 139 westbound transatlantic crossings from her home port of Le Havre to New York. Normandie held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing at several points during her service career, during which the RMS Queen Mary was her main rival.

During World War II, Normandie was seized by U.S. authorities at New York and renamed USS Lafayette. In 1942, the liner caught fire while being converted to a troopship, capsized onto her port side and came to rest on the mud of the Hudson River at Pier 88, the site of the current New York Passenger Ship Terminal. Although salvaged at great expense, restoration was deemed too costly and she was scrapped in October 1946.
