Traveling to France?

If you speak French, do so.

If you do not, learn a few basic phrases—and learn them well.

Do not be offended if your French pronunciation is corrected. Good topics are food, wine and art.

Be careful not to inadvertently demean any aspect of French culture, especially in comparison with that of the U.S.

The French are generally private people.

Personal questions are considered poor form.

Travel Tip - When you greet someone or enter a store in France, remember to say bonjour to the clerk.

This applies even when purchasing a small item as well, for example at a ticket booth, or before asking someone a question.

It is considered even more polite if you say bonjour madame/monsieur before proceeding on to whatever business you have.

Say bonsoir if it's after 3 pm and make sure to say merci, au revoir (thank you, goodbye) when leaving a store.

DID YOU KNOW... In France during spring through fall, many villages and towns hold a weekly or monthly "vide grenier", which literally means "emptying of the attic" and is similar to a flea market. These are often posted in the local town newspapers with the exact place and time.
