Unlike many heron species, the Whistling Heron (Syrigma sibilatrix) tends to prefer open grassland habitats for foraging. We had multiple looks at many individuals during our tour of Southeastern Brazil.
The Black-and-Gold Cotinga (Lipaugus ater) is an endemic species found only in the humid montane forest of the southeastern Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The species has an extremely small range and is declining due to habitat loss. We were fortunate enough to come across this beautiful bird on today's trip to Macaé de Cima.
A Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum) was being mobbed today by a group of tanagers on our walk through the Atlantic Forest of Brazil.

Another day with great birds in Brazil. A very confiding Rufous-tailed Jacamar (Galbula ruficauda) was just one of our 80 species observed.

The Buffy Helmetcrest (Oxypogon stuebelii), a vulnerable high-elevation species of hummingbird (seen here at 13,000ft), is difficult to find among the wind blown stunted vegetation of the paramo habitat of Colombia. An amazing bird and a target species of our October tour! Come along and see one!

The Chestnut Wood-Quail is an endemic bird found only in Colombia. The species is near threatened and has been declining for quite some time. It is so nice to not only find the birds, but to see their young in tow!
