Im just putting the final touches to a bespoke 10 day wine and food trip to Sicily in March for a group of clients, taking in Etna wineries, cooking royalty and my old friends Natalia Ravida and Marilena Barbera in the south west around Marsala and Menfi. Very much looking forward to being back there. Its a good thought at the start of January.

Our Spanish courses still have some spaces starting on 18th September and 2nd October 2. Or what about an exclusive Sherry tour on 11 Sept?

How about a short break in Le Marche, situated east of the Sibilini Mountains, this region has not yet been discovered. Stay at Casal dei Fichi in the heart of the country side, learn to cook in Maria’s kitchen and enjoy a long lunch seafood on the beach at Damiani and Rossi (see pictures) – available all year round.

Please raise a glass to Mike Ghialarducci, friend, esteemed colleague and great traveling companion. His memorial takes place today at the Depot Hotel in Sonoma.
Thanks for all the good times Mike.

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Loyal Customers,

As many of you know, Michael, our beloved Co-owner, Chef-proprietor, and father to our Executive Chef, passed away suddenly this week. His career in the restaurant business spanned fifty-five years, beginning with his work in L’Auberge in Redwood City and his father’s restaurant Villa d’Este in Los Altos. Michael opened his first restaurant, “Chez Joseph” on Jack London Square in Oakland in 1970, followed by “Columbus Street” in Los Altos, and “Liaison” in Palo Alto.

On December 9, 1985, Michael and Gia purchased Sonoma’s historic Giacomo Mazza House, taking over a business long known locally as the “Depot Hotel Restaurant.” Michael and Gia converted the upstairs floor of the Mazza House into their family home, where they proceeded to raise their two children, Gianna Ghilarducci Kelly and Antonio Francesco Ghilarducci.

In total, Michael operated the Depot Hotel Restaurant with his family for 1,482 weeks, during which time he typically supervised ordering, menu preparation, and house operations. A week seldom went by without Michael pounding veal in the kitchen on a Wednesday morning, negotiating with wine salesmen at the bar at midday, or visiting tables and greeting guests at the door.

Michael was welcoming, gentle and affable; possessed of a deep, genuine laugh and a marvelous sense of mirth, yet also a seriousness and gravity as occasions called for.

We will carry on in Michael's spirit, as he would wish, by continuing to welcome guests and customers to the Depot. We look forward to seeing each of your smiling faces sometime in the coming months and hope that you will feel his warmth whenever you enter here.

Here is some lovely feed back from Carol who has just been to Spain and has been cooking with Annie.

We had a really lovely, fun time meeting Annie and our fellow chefs and came away with some terrific recipes. The Moroccan Chicken dish has already been given the thumbs up by my husband, tomorrow it’s the Sticky Orange and Lemon Cake.

The course was actually held in Annies own beautiful home in Vejer de la Frontera where we lunched on the roof top terrace enhanced by distant sea views and the rooftops of fabulous Vejer. I came away with some great tips and new ideas, oh plus a few new gadgets and ingredients.

A lot of thought and energy had been put into our three days so that we could all make the most of our time, finally finishing with an impromptu evening performance by a duet of flamenco singing and guitar on her rooftop terrace………… magical. Being a softie I admit to shedding a tear as it was the end of 3 really different and enjoyable days. Valuable ’ switching off’ time, thank you Annie.
