On this day in 1915, John Kipling, the son of world famous Rudyard Kipling, is killed at the Battle of Loos.
John was leading his platoon in his first battle but his body was never identified.
Rudyard would spend the rest of his life searching for his boy.
In 1992 after much detective work, the headstone of an Irish Guards officer was finally changed, to mark the burial of John Kipling at St. Mary's A.D.S. Cemetery.

I’m working from London today so can’t witness the 80th Operation Market Garden commemorations. This is the closest I’ll get…
I loved this film growing up, one of those classics that got a young girl hooked on military history.
Remembering all those boys that jumped and drove 80 years ago today, and those that didn’t come back.

Battle of Britain Day is commemorated annually on 15th September to mark a crucial turning point during the Battle of Britain. It was a day of heavy & sustained fighting with the Germans suffering their highest losses since the 18th August. Fighting would continue for another few weeks, but the action on 15 September was seen as an overwhelming and decisive defeat for the Luftwaffe. Hitler's plans to invade Britain would have to be put on hold.

Sophie is out with a couple from Australia who have travelled over not only for a great holiday but to walk in the footsteps of their relative.
Norman would go through two years of the war, seeing some intense fighting across the Somme and Ypres. He would lose his life in the last action his unit took part in.

Trenches in Verdun
A gorgeous morning walk through the trenches surrounding Fort Souville. Walking in the footsteps of history and taking in the tranquility of a once violent landscape #Verdun #1WW
The Ring of Remembrance at Notre-Dame-de-Lorett. Engraved are the names of 579,606 men who lost their lives in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais between 1914-1918. They are list alphabetically irrespective of nationality rank or religion.
Today Sophie started at Neuville-St Vaast German War Cemetery, the largest German cemetery in France. This is the final resting place of 44,830 solders from the heavy fighting between 1914 – 1917.
Back after another moving & memorable tour. We explored the landscape of Ypres, Villers Bret, Somme & Arras so that 100+ years later our guest could understand her relatives #1WW experiences. Both soldiers would never return home, but I hope we have done their stories justice.

Travel with Sophie’s Great War Tours
Sophie's Great War Tours is a family-run bespoke tour operator, creating exceptional battlefield tours across France, Belgium and the Netherlands. With an end to end service, we take care of all your needs including transfers from the UK, travel in Europe and accommodation.
Hello all, I'm Sophie your guide. A graduate in military history from the University of Birmingham, I have studied, toured and guided on the Western Front battlefields for the last 15 years. I have built up an extensive knowledge of the Great War and I look forward to sharing it with you.
There are lots of great guides to choose from and other businesses offering tours too, so why choose to explore history with me?
The service I offer is unlike most on the battlefield tours market. Once we have decided together what type of tour you’d like to take, you don’t have to do a thing. Often I am able to collect you from your front door or if not, then we meet at a very convenient location. All the organisation is done by me and you do not need to worry about driving on the other side of road!
We go to great lengths to make sure your trip is personalised to reflect your own interests and family connections with the Great War. Every element of your tour is customisable.
When you are away with Sophie’s Great War Tours you become part of our extended family. Our first priority is always to ensure you have the best possible experience exploring the battlefields: we like to think that our relaxed and sociable approach to sharing history together helps make that happen.
My scheduled tours have a maximum of 6 guests travelling, meaning you have plenty of opportunity to ask those burning questions and to get the most from a fantastic experience.
