in 1916 the Military Service Act is passed. Single men aged between 18 & 41 are eligible for conscription. Exemptions exist for the medically unfit, clergymen, teachers & some industrial workers. Men who object for moral reasons could be offered civilian jobs or non-fighting roles at the front.

His reply, "of course it is sweetheart!". And so it began…

This March I had the pleasure of visiting Thailand, to meet hotel partners and recce for our future Far East tour offerings.
Today I reflect on a wonderful place, wonderful people & the trauma they faced in 2004. Let us remember when we travel to paradise, the 228,000 people killed in this natural disaster.

Our last advent post is a poignant one for us battlefield guides.
Read on about Fabian Ware. He's a man that has influenced so much, and you probably interact with him most days, without even realising it.
This years advent calendar theme has been around individuals that have served and saved. There is no one else that fits the bill of service, than our late Queen.
A Birmingham man that paid the ultimate sacrifice to save his comrades.
Sergeant Albert Gill is a Victoria Cross recipient. His actions clearly mark him out as someone that served and saved, thus making the SGWT advent calendar. Albert was born in Birmingham on 8 September 1879. He joined the Army soon after leaving school and was posted to India with the Kings Roy

Travel with Sophie’s Great War Tours
Sophie's Great War Tours is a family-run bespoke tour operator, creating exceptional battlefield tours across France, Belgium and the Netherlands. With an end to end service, we take care of all your needs including transfers from the UK, travel in Europe and accommodation.
Hello all, I'm Sophie your guide. A graduate in military history from the University of Birmingham, I have studied, toured and guided on the Western Front battlefields for the last 15 years. I have built up an extensive knowledge of the Great War and I look forward to sharing it with you.
There are lots of great guides to choose from and other businesses offering tours too, so why choose to explore history with me?
The service I offer is unlike most on the battlefield tours market. Once we have decided together what type of tour you’d like to take, you don’t have to do a thing. Often I am able to collect you from your front door or if not, then we meet at a very convenient location. All the organisation is done by me and you do not need to worry about driving on the other side of road!
We go to great lengths to make sure your trip is personalised to reflect your own interests and family connections with the Great War. Every element of your tour is customisable.
When you are away with Sophie’s Great War Tours you become part of our extended family. Our first priority is always to ensure you have the best possible experience exploring the battlefields: we like to think that our relaxed and sociable approach to sharing history together helps make that happen.
My scheduled tours have a maximum of 6 guests travelling, meaning you have plenty of opportunity to ask those burning questions and to get the most from a fantastic experience.
