VISIT THE WONDERS OF YORK
Enjoy two nights in this enchanting city which is steeped in history, a beautiful and interesting place to visit, and very easy for sightseeing with most attractions within walking distance of each other.
York is an English, historic walled city in North Yorkshire situated where the River Ouse and Foss join. The city was founded by in 71 AD. And became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and later adopted by the Vikings, who named the city, “Jorvik”, with its historic ruins still visible today. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre, a role it has retained.
Its huge 13th-century Gothic cathedral, York Minster, has an impressive medieval stained glass and two functioning bell towers. You will witness breath-taking medieval architecture, discover its Roman roots and learn about the Minster’s role in Viking York. York Minister is a truly stunning structure and is considered one of the most magnificent cathedrals in all of Europe.
Close by the Minster is the Little Shambles, with its cobbled streets and quaint boutiques, to compliment the international brands located in the main shopping streets just 5 minutes away.
York’s Viking heritage is depicted in the well-designed Jorvik Viking Centre, a main city attraction. It is a museum and visitor attraction which tells the story of York as you embark on a “motorised” journey around this entertaining and educational exhibition.
In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre! Visit the York Chocolate Trail which covers chocolatier Terry’s, with its famous brands such as Chocolate Orange, Yorkie , KitKat, Smarties and Aero! York is also famous for toffee and French Almonds, so make sure you sample the infamous Pontifract Cake – which is not a cake at all – but is in fact, a delicious, strong liquorice!
Fans of the TV series Brideshead Revisited will love the stately home of Castle Howard. It’s worth making time to visit this majestic country estate, just 10 km north of York, where you can explore the lavish interiors, grand architecture and beautiful parkland, gardens and mausoleum. It will be a well-invested day on your travels.
Along with all these attractions, there are also over 30 world class museums to explore such as art galleries, The Transport Museum and York Castle. Round off your day with relaxing afternoon cruise along the River Ouse, with City Cruises-the end to your perfect trip!
