Italy Translated Trip designer for Italy. Custom travel planning and consulting for independent travelers. I am an expat American living in Italy.

I have been in the old country since 2006. During this time, I've been lucky enough to have traveled a lot - meticulously planning every trip. I've done it all: solo female travel, couples travel, traveling with small children and even with extended family. I have learned so much over the years about how best to see this wonderful country. I planned countless trips for family and friends, which i

s what led me to start this company and blog. I love, love, love planning trips and helping people understand how Italy works. I get seriously excited about all the options of things to see and love envisioning the type of trip my clients will have. I also teach a fun and informal Italian class in Milan. If your travel plans include a stop in Milan, think about joining in! You can see the class description on my site. For more info on Italy, have a look at my blog for travel and language tips and maybe even just a laugh (I like to make fun of the crazy things that go on over here). If you are looking for inspiration for your next trip to Italy or just need a five-minute escape from life, head over to my Instagram account for pics of beautiful Italy. I also write for The Telegraph and have written for National Geographic and CNN.

A visit to the gorgeous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is like taking a little step back in time. Built between 1865 and 1877, it was a symbol of modernity and unity during Italy’s post-unification era. It is one of the oldest shopping malls in the world. Make sure to stop for a coffee at Camparino in Galleria right at the end of the mall facing the Duomo. Verdi was a regular there back in the day. So fun getting a coffee where Verdi used to hang out. 🎩 🎵

It's Christmas time, which means it's Panettone time, a little history on this classic Italian sweet bread served during holiday time.

The story of the Panettone 🥖

There are a few ideas on how the panettone first came about but according to popular legend, panettone was created in the 15th century by a Milanese baker named Toni. The legend of Pan de Toni credits a Milanese kitchen assistant named Toni with creating panettone during the 15th century. After a Christmas dessert mishap, Toni improvised with leftover dough, butter, sugar, and dried fruits, delighting the duke’s guests. The name evolved from “Pan de Toni” to today’s iconic panettone.

Another idea comes from Medieval Roots. The earliest mentions of sweetened, leavened bread in Italy date back to the Middle Ages. These breads were often reserved for special occasions, including Christmas, due to the cost of sugar and dried fruits.

Lastly, it’s Renaissance Growth. During the Renaissance, panettone gained popularity among Milanese aristocrats. The cake became a symbol of wealth and celebration, as its rich ingredients were a luxury at the time.

By the 19th century, panettone was firmly established as a Christmas tradition, particularly in Northern Italy. Families would share it during festive meals, symbolizing unity and prosperity.

Piazza Unità d’Italia in Trieste is Europe’s biggest seafront square. This expansive space dates back to the mid-19th century - built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire's rule of the area. It was originally called Piazza Grande and is a mix of Neoclassical, Baroque, and Viennese architectural styles.

After Trieste became part of Italy in 1918, the square was renamed to honor Italy’s unification.

Caption: Flamingos... in Milan? 🦩✨ Yes, it's a thing! Tucked away behind the Villa Invernizzi is home to a flock of vibrant flamingos casually hanging out in their own little garden. To see them, you have to go around back and peek through the fence.

Only in Italy can you enjoy frescos while picking up your pasta. This supermarket in Venice (Despar) is set in an old movie theater in the Cannaregio district and is the perfect place to grab a bottle of wine or walk around. Beautifully painted ceilings and a gorgeous staircase that leads to the main shopping area make this a dreamy little place to escape the crowds of Venice.

This is not the first supermarket Despar has opened in a historic building. They have also renovated buildings in Trento, Verona, and Vicenza.

What better time to head off to the thermal baths than when the weather gets chilly or even cold! This spa is in the town of San Pellegrino (yes, the same one as the sparkling bottled water we drink). It is a gorgeous facility - the main building alone is super-duper fancy, (Liberty Style - see second pic) - which makes it all the funnier to see people walking around that place in their white robes.

Today is All Souls' Day in Italy - a day to remember deceased loved ones by visiting cemeteries and leaving flowers on their graves. I like how there is a specific day to do this. I actually love cemeteries in general. I don't know why. I guess I find them peaceful and beautiful. Sometimes they are unkept and sad, yet they are still moving. Here are a few pics of various cemeteries around Italy.

Rome has more than 900 churches - it has more than any other city in the world. Even if you are not a religious person, they are peaceful and beautiful. And in Rome - you even find some masterpieces just hanging around: Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael, etc...

Can't go wrong with that. ⛪

Bressanone aka Brixen – where Italy meets Austria in the cutest little mountain town.

With its colorful pastel buildings and serious Alpine vibes, Brixen feels like a perfect blend of Italian charm with Austrian influence. 🍷🍺 But why does everyone here speak German? Well, this region was once part of Austria, and even after becoming part of Italy in 1919, the German language stuck around. 🇮🇹🇦🇹

Whether you're exploring the old town, sipping on a coffee at a local café ☕, or taking in the stunning Dolomite views, this town is like stepping into a postcard.

Parco degli Acquedotti is one of my favorite places in Rome. Not exactly in the center of town, but worth the visit.

Home to six Roman aqueducts - these ancient structures once supplied the entire city with water, showcasing some seriously impressive Roman engineering. 💧🛠️ It’s like walking through history, surrounded by towering stone arches that have stood the test of time!

It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing picnic 🧺, a peaceful stroll, or a bit of cycling 🚴‍♂️ with epic views.

How to get there: Hop on Metro A direction: Anagnina and get off at Giulio Agricola – from there, it's just a short walk down Viale Giulio Agricola.

Spending a little time in ATX giving our house some much needed attention. Enjoying Texas in springtime. Just found out this guy in the first photo is a 20 minute walk from our house. Our neighbors are growing bluebonnets (the state flower) in their front yards and painting murals on their garages. You can buy deer corn at the local grocery store too. Austin is a fun town.
