It's Christmas time, which means it's Panettone time, a little history on this classic Italian sweet bread served during holiday time.
The story of the Panettone 🥖
There are a few ideas on how the panettone first came about but according to popular legend, panettone was created in the 15th century by a Milanese baker named Toni. The legend of Pan de Toni credits a Milanese kitchen assistant named Toni with creating panettone during the 15th century. After a Christmas dessert mishap, Toni improvised with leftover dough, butter, sugar, and dried fruits, delighting the duke’s guests. The name evolved from “Pan de Toni” to today’s iconic panettone.
Another idea comes from Medieval Roots. The earliest mentions of sweetened, leavened bread in Italy date back to the Middle Ages. These breads were often reserved for special occasions, including Christmas, due to the cost of sugar and dried fruits.
Lastly, it’s Renaissance Growth. During the Renaissance, panettone gained popularity among Milanese aristocrats. The cake became a symbol of wealth and celebration, as its rich ingredients were a luxury at the time.
By the 19th century, panettone was firmly established as a Christmas tradition, particularly in Northern Italy. Families would share it during festive meals, symbolizing unity and prosperity.
