Roaming Free is getting a handful up upgrades and maintenance this month. This past week we got the wireless docking remote installed. It’s incredible how easy docking is now - walking around with a wireless remote that controls the engine, bow, and stern thrusters.

We closed out 2023 in a very exciting way: by closing on our dream live-aboard boat! 🎉

It’s been 10 years since we began Roaming Free. In 2013, we let our lease expire and moved into our 27-foot travel trailer. Megan, initially skeptical, thought it would be a short-lived adventure. Little did we know it would evolve from a few months into a few years, transitioning from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel, and roaming all over the west coast.

When we originally designed our Roaming Free logo, we included an RV and a boat to represent our current and future travel aspirations. Living aboard a boat has been a dream of mine for more than two decades.

Health reasons and the birth our two amazing kids had us halting our full-time travels—and honestly, we weren’t sure we’d ever get the chance to fulfill the dream of life on the water.

But a few months ago we came across our future boat – a 2003 Nordhavn 50. Nordhavn, renowned for crafting ocean-crossing boats, produced only 27 of this particular model, with only a few built in our desired configuration.

With a 3,000+ mile fuel range, a water-maker for freshwater conversion, a wing (backup engine), stabilizer fins for minimal roll, and ample fridge and freezer space for months on the water, it is ready for pretty much anything we throw at it.

The upcoming year will be dedicated to learning, with shorter trips along the East Coast. Our future plans include exploring the Bahamas, Caribbean, and crossing the Atlantic to Europe. We’re excited to document and share our journey as we get closer to living aboard! 🛥️✨
