The base of the cliffline en route to Eagle Point Buttress. This steep section of trail averages a 28% grade across 374 vertical feet on a quarter-mile of trail. Cardio matters. Walk hills, incline dreadmill, or run to stay in shape and take this climb with a grain of salt.
I've hiked most everything in and around Red River Gorge, so when I see possible new to me overlooks, I put them on my Winter hiking list. Off trail exploring is best done after the leaves have gone.
Here's the topo map view of the hike to Jailhouse Rock and a couple of the Star Gap Branch East Overlooks. It's a short hike at less than four miles and only has a couple modest scrambles - making it accessible to a wide range of hikers.
Caution overhead! Helene knocked over plenty of trees and Forest Service definitely got their chainsaw work in clearing roads and trails in the region. Keep an eye out - especially on unmarked and unmaintained trails.
