The Upbeat Path Travel with me. Hi, we're Steph & Jimmy...

and we're so glad you've joined us on The Upbeat Path!
(7)

We're an American couple with a penchant - okay, maybe an obsession - for being on the go. It all started in 2015 when, shortly after starting to date, we decided to plan a 6-week trek through Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Since then our wanderlust has only grown stronger, to the point of deciding to base our entire livelihood around travel. We've now been on countless bu

ses, planes, cars, and trains through Asia, South America, Europe, the Caribbean, and of course across our home country of the United States. We've come to realize that for us, the joy and mental presence that comes from experiencing a new corner of the world for the first time is 100% worth all the bumps in the road that come along with it. While our lifestyle may not be for everybody, we truly do hope that by sharing our adventures, the explorer in you wishes to step outside of their comfort zone and onto The Upbeat Path! Please follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to keep up to date on our current adventures!

𝚃𝚛𝚊𝚒𝚗 𝚂𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚎𝚝, 𝙷𝚊𝚗𝚘𝚒 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

Located in the famous Old Quarter of Hanoi, Train Street is a one-of-a-kind thrill. Watch as locals go about their day and tourists sip coffee or bia on little stools surrounding the tracks - then as soon as the impending train sounds, stools and tables are packed away and everyone is shoved into the walls as to not get crushed by the training storming by!
I’ve lived in Hanoi for a year and can’t believe it took me this long to see the train. It’s become a huge tourist attraction and the number of bars that popped up in the last year didn’t exist when I was backpacking Vietnam.

I’ve been living in Hanoi for the past 8 months and think it’s about time I start writing about it.

So what better topic to write about than food?! 🥢

When you think of Vietnamese food, what comes to mind first? Pho? Banh Mi? I thought so. And yeah, those are in fact quintessential Vietnamese recipes, but there’s so many more Vietnamese delicacies that you simply have to try from all over the country. And since I’m currently living in Hanoi

A few weeks ago I journeyed with some friends from Salzburg to the Germany border to visit Königsee, or Kings Lake. It was an absolutely gorgeous September day and we all stripped down to our bathing suits and jumped in the frigid clear water.

Did we freeze our bums off? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely!

Yesterday I visited Golan Heights, the area captured from Syria and occupied by Israel during the 6 Day War, which Israel effectively annexed in 1981.
It was a strange and depressing feeling, standing atop what was once a Syrian bunker and overlooking Syria's now nearly uninhabited cities, knowing that most Syrians live constant threat and fear as I can peer over their abandoned home in peace.
I pray all Syrians can find this same peace and safety one day soon.

This was taken at Oregon Eclipse last year, the incredible festival centered around the solar eclipse. Not sure if any festival will ever top this one!

Singapore was my first stop of my Southeast Asia adventure that started about four months ago. After over 24 hours of travel, I can’t say I minded the lack of culture shock that Singapore (didn’t) offer.
The uber-clean streets, incredible architecture, reliable public transit, delicious food and - my least favorite - Western pricing made me feel like I was in some utopia metropolis.
Seems like it was ages ago that I was in Singapore, but soon enough I’ll be back for my flight to the US. It’ll be bittersweet for sure. Have you been to Singapore?

If you’re headed down Vietnam and wondering where to stop after Hoi An, check out Quy Nhon - or more specifically, Bãi Xép, the oceanside village dotted with guesthouses and bungalow resorts with a relaxed and authentic vibe. Perfection!

Arrived in Bali from HCMC, Vietnam yesterday morning after 13 hours of travel and no sleep. Dare I say I was almost a bit culture shocked? Or maybe my wallet was shocked, idk. Either way I feel more like I’m in a tropical Brooklyn than Asia. And I guess I’m okay with that for now. I mean, who doesn’t love smoothie bowls in paradise? 🏝🌞🌅🥥🍓

Two magical months later, it’s finally time to say “tạm biệt” for now to Vietnam. I couldn’t be more grateful to have had the opportunity to explore this country - from its mountains to its coastline, to its rice terraces and its increasingly globalized cities - and while I’m excited for my next adventure in Indonesia, I must say I’m already thinking about the next time I’ll get to return. cảm ơn việt nam! 🇻🇳 🏮

In Vietnam’s northernmost province bordering China, Ha Giang, time seems to have stood still as the village natives continue to wear their ethnic garb and live in a similar fashion that I’d imagine they have for many years.

On my first few days in Hanoi, I took to the streets to capture some everyday life in this crazy, boisterous, loud, and absolutely fantastic Vietnamese city. This couple was seemingly posing for a photoshoot, but the photographer was nowhere to be found. I wish I had given them my biz card, because I think I captured quite a moment here.

So glad to be back in Chiang Mai, undoubtably one of my favorite cities on this earth. I love that in the midst of the chaos of city life, it’s so easy to find peace here simply by turning the corner. Not to mention the history, the gorgeous wats and the delicious food! 🛵🏯🗺
