Solar Eclipse Faroe Islands 2015 Welcome to the official Total Solar Eclipse page for the eclipse taking place in The Faroe Islands 20th March 2015.

A Total Solar Eclipse will occur on March 20th 2015 in the North Atlantic, a geographical location which for the largest part is covered by the North Atlantic Ocean. but in the middle of it all, the small country of The Faroe Islands can be found. It is A Group of 18 Isles, 17 of them inhabited by a total of just over 49.000 People. This is a well hidden jewel, a modern civilisation with a well pr

eserved history and traditions, as well as the beautiful nature, the vulcanic green mountains and the bird cliffs. In this exiting place the next total solar eclipse will take place.

Road restrictions

If driving to see the eclipse, be aware that the roads will be busy, and parking is limited at many locations.

Official guidance has been issued about parking for the eclipse. To ensure a flow of traffic for everyone, it is not possible to park on narrow roads. Usual traffic and parking restrictions apply in built up areas. If you are planning to drive on eclipse day, see detailed guidance here.

It is important not to block the roads. If parking along the road, only use 1 side. In case of emergency there always have to be 2 lanes available on the roads for ambulances, the fire brigade and the police to pass by.

See this map for information about parking. The green lines on the map indicate, where it is possible to park the car during the solar eclipse.

Weather update!

Two large high pressures will be located to the south and north of the Faroe Islands. A low pressure system will pass very close to the Faroe Islands on Wednesday night – and still be close to the Faroe Islands on Friday morning. It all depends on how fast the front passes the Faroe Islands, it´s a matter of timing but the risk for cloudy weather has gone down.. Weather development is still very uncertain and we estimate, based on current forecasts the chance to see the total eclipse in the Faroe Islands to be 30-40%.

The Faroe Eclipse Weather project studied the weather at eclipse time in March 2014 and was led by Dr. Geoff Sims and Dr. Kate Russo.

The project it involved folk from all over the islands taking a photo of the sky at 09:40 each day, for the entire month. The end result was a large dataset showing varying weather throughout the small archipelago. The data, alongside daily cloud forecasts, were analysed quantitatively, and the results were published late last year in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

How should you plan to see the eclipse in the Faroe Islands?

All of the Faroe Islands lie within the path of totality, which means that everyone can just step outside and look up on eclipse morning to see the total solar eclipse. BUT it's not that easy - there are mountains everywhere you look. Beautiful, but they may just block the crucial moment of totality.

Whatever location you choose, you need to make sure you are able to see above mountains at eclipse time. This task is made so much easier by Michael Zeiler at Great American Eclipse.com who has prepared a range of maps to help.

Take a look at the following maps - if a location is in shadow, you will NOT be able to see first contact at 8.38am - which is when the moon first makes contact with the sun, appearing as if there is a tiny bite out of the sun. You may be able to see other parts of the eclipse, but I would suggest you are in a location that allows you to see the whole thing, starting at 8.38am.

The Total Solar Eclipse 2015 is approaching quickly and we all wonder how the weather is going to be. Birgar Johannesen, a local in Tórshavn, who every day documents the weather, has made the following list of the weather 20th March since 2008:

2008: A good deal of snow
2009: Dry and calm with a lot of sun. Up to 15 Degrees Celcius.
2010: Dry and good weather in general. A few showers between 7.00 – 8.00PM
2011: Cold and grey throughout the day, and dry during the morning. At 3.00PM in the afternoon it started raining and the wind increased. During the evening it was stormy.
2012: In the morning from 8.00-9.00AM the weather was good and dry. After that it rained until 10.00 at night with the except from noon to 1.00PM.
2013: Beautiful weather with sun all day long. In the afternoon from 2.00 – 3.00PM it was a bit of sleet.
2014: Changing weather. Mostly dry and some hail showers. Some sun but windy.
