Una meta di viaggio inusuale, lontana e poco conosciuta, non dovrebbe per questo frenare dal visitarla almeno una volta nella vita. Per quale motivo?
Prima di tutto è l’unica isola al mondo con un triplo incoronamento da parte dell’UNESCO: Patrimonio Mondiale della Natura, Geoparco Globale e Riserva della Biosfera.
Sto parlando dell’isola di Jeju (o Jeju-do), l’isola più grande della Corea del Sud, dove sto viaggiando al momento. A motivo della sua conformazione vulcanica (si contano almeno 360 vulcani dormienti) offre l’esperienza straordinaria di addentrarsi nei tunnel di lava più lunghi al mondo.
Insieme ai paesaggi da paradiso tropicale, non sorprende che in anni recenti l’isola sia stata inserita tra le 7 Meraviglie del Mondo Naturale!
Può bastare adesso per decidervi a raggiungerla?

An unusual, distant and unknown travel destination, it shouldn’t stop from visiting it at least once in a lifetime. For what reason?
First of all, this island is the UNESCO’s only triple-crown winner: World Heritage of Nature, Global Geopark and Biosphere Reserve.
I'm talking about Jeju (or Jejudo) Island, the largest island of South Korea, where I am traveling at the moment. Because of its volcanic conformation (there are at least 360 unactive volcanoes) it offers the extraordinary experience of entering into the world’s longest volcanic lava tube.
Together with the tropical paradise landscapes, it is not surprising that in recent years the island has been included among the 7 Wonders of the Natural World!
Could it be enough now to decide to visit it?

In una notte limpida di mezza estate al Mount Cook non ho potuto far a meno di restare estasiato dallo spettacolo sovrastante alla mia vista, che ho dovuto per forza immortalarlo.
La nebulosa ovale in basso a sinistra, stando alla leggenda dei Māori, avrebbe le sembianze di un Kiwi, l'animale nazionale della Nuova Zelanda (da non confondere col frutto omonimo 🥝). Immediatamente sopra alla nebulosa a sinistra si possono notare quattro stelle disposte a forma di rombo o aquilone orizzontale, che corrispondono alla costellazione di Southern Cross (o Croce del Sud), tra l'altro parte integrante delle bandiere della Nuova Zelanda 🇳🇿 e dell'Australia 🇦🇺 (nonché di altre isole del Pacifico).
Inoltre, a destra, i due piccoli ammassi nuvolosi altro non sono che due galassie vere e proprie a milioni di anni luce di distanza.
Per quanto vogliate sforzare la vista 🤓 per localizzare quanto sopra evidenziato, questo squarcio della Via Lattea 🌌 e del firmamento stesso si possono osservare solo nell'emisfero australe 🌏 🙃

On a clear Midsummer night at Mount Cook I could not help but be enchanted by the spectacle in the sky above, which I had to immortalise.
The oval nebula at the bottom left, according to Māori legend, would have the appearance of a Kiwi, the national animal of the New Zealand (not to be confused with the fruit of the same name 🥝). Immediately above the nebula on the left four stars can be seen, positioned in the shape of a rhombus or horizontal kite, which correspond to the constellation of Southern Cross, an integral part of the New Zealand 🇳🇿 and the Australia 🇦🇺 flags (as well as other Pacific Islands).
Also, on the right, the two small cloudy clusters are actually two galaxies, millions of light years apart.
As much as you want to strain your view 🤓 to see what I have described above, this part of the Milky Way 🌌 and the firmament itself can only be seen in the southern hemisphere 🌏 🙃
